prompt 21. "Go with me?" "As long as you hold my hand."
It was a slasher Harry distinctly remembered Sirius mentioning seeing with his mum and dad when it first came out back when his parents were still practically kids. He dismissed it then as it wasn't often he went to the cinema (read: never) and also, cinemas rarely showed old movies, especially those of the horror genre.
It was close to Samhain and the cinema near their apartment was clearly having some kind of Halloween special event since the line-up for the entire week was filled with horror movies, old and new, classics and hidden gems.
Draco was looking at him half curious and half concerned as Harry stood frozen with indecision in front of the poster.
"You okay?", his boyfriend asked gently, squeezing his hand in comfort.
"Yeah, it's just a movie S-Sirius mentioned. My mum liked it." Samhain was a difficult time for him, for many reasons, only becoming more strained once Draco introduced him to "the old ways". It was a time of mourning, reflection, and healing. A time for those who came before you and those no longer by your side. A time to honour the ancestors.
It was an unorthodox way of doing it sure, but Harry thought that going to a muggle cinema and watching a movie his mum liked and dragged his dad and his godfather to was a perfect way to show that he still held respect for them. That he still cared about them even though it's been over twenty years.
"Do you wanna go?" Draco asked and peered curiously at the poster – the screaming red and warning yellow along with the void of black in the background.
"I don't know... maybe." Harry scratched the back of his neck nervously. He did want to go, but what if he didn't enjoy it? Wouldn't that be the opposite of honouring his parents?
"Well, what's it about?"
"It's a slasher flick," Harry shrugged and then sighed at Draco's bemused expression. Obviously, Draco wouldn't know what a slasher was. "The plot is secondary to the gore. It's supposed to be frightening. Or ridiculous and hilarious, depending on how you look at it and how realistic it looks."
"You should go if you want. You'll either enjoy it or you'll get a glimpse into how much taste your mother had."
"And if I hate it?" Harry inquired nervously. He could feel his hand beginning to sweat but Draco didn't let go of his tight, grounding hold.
"Nothing. You don't have to like it. The fact that you thought of your mum and are willing to try it out is enough. We'll do the rituals anyway and this can be another connection for you this year."
Harry exhaled a breath he didn't know he was holding and nodded slowly. He let go of Draco's hand and moved until he was tucked under his arm, looking up at him.
"Go with me?"
Draco narrowed his eyes and cast one more glance at the dubiously scary movie poster in front of them. "As long as you hold my hand."
Harry chuckled and grabbed Draco's hand to drag him to the ticket booth. He did end up liking the movie (and Draco's comforting hold on his hand was only partially responsible for that assessment).
