232. "It's okay to have doubts, as long as you don't let them overwhelm you."
"Harry?" Draco's voice was barely above a whisper and if they weren't sprawled all over each other, listening to a Quidditch game through Wireless, Harry wouldn't have been able to hear him.
"Yeah?" Harry propped himself up by smashing his elbow into the side of the couch. Draco sounded incredibly bothered by something and he wanted to see his face while they talked. A wave of a wand lowered the volume of the broadcast to a gentle white noise.
"I'm scared," Draco said with a deep, shaky breath.
"About tomorrow?" Harry asked, tomorrow being the day of picking up their adopted daughter and bringing her home.
"About the future, in general," Draco shrugged, folding his arms over his chest. Harry sat up with his legs over Draco's but in a fairly stable position.
"Did you talk to Healer Raywood about it?" Harry had a good feeling he had but it never hurt to check. They'd agreed long ago that they would always put asking questions before assumptions.
"Yes. He said that it's okay to have doubts, as long as you don't let them overwhelm you."
Harry nodded both in agreement and understanding. He took Draco's hand and intertwined their fingers in silent support. "And what are you doubting?"
"My, um, my ability to be a father. A good father." By the look on Draco's face, and their previous conversations, Harry knew that the words took a massive amount of effort to leave Draco's mouth.
"Do you doubt it because of Lucius?"
"How can I be a good father when I have no reference of what that even is?"
"We're on the same footing here, babe," Harry said with a sad smile. "What did Raywood say?"
"That if I ever find myself stuck with what I should do I should do the opposite of what my father would have done," Draco shrugged and Harry could instantly tell that he found the advice dubious at best. "But wouldn't that make me too lenient? I don't want Maria to turn into a spoiled, naïve little prat."
"I think there is a line between being strict and being cruel, Draco. I think it has to do with dismissiveness, and if I know you at all, I know that you're as far from dismissive as you can get."
Draco didn't say anything for a long moment. He then sighed and turned up the Wireless with Harry's wand before pulling Harry himself back to him so they could cuddle again. They listened to the game until Draco's heartbeat became slow and steady again.
"I'm scared I'm gonna ruin her," Draco admitted just as one of the teams scored a goal. "She's so tiny and precious. I don't know how to handle precious things."
"You do, trust me. I saw it when we first met her – you looked at her like she was your new sun, and I feel the same way," Harry pressed a soft kiss to Draco's cheek. "Do you trust me to be a good dad to her?"
"Yes, of course," Draco said instantly. "There is no one better."
"And I trust you to be the same. I know you. And if you found yourself in doubt, trust me to help you out. We're in this together." Harry looked up to see Draco watching him with a soft expression. He leaned up to kiss him on the mouth. "We can do this."
"We can do this," Draco repeated, settling back down to listen to the game, this time with a bright, excited smile on his face.
