Do you guys want to know what chapter I finished writing yesterday?

Because I hecking finished writing chapter ten.

One thing to note for this chapter: I have not read The Dangerous Gift so I don't know that much about modern IceWings, but that's okay because this story is set in the past. I took some liberties in creating my own quirks for the tribes, as you'll soon see, and I hope you enjoy them! I also consulted the wiki as much as I could.

Now, I edited this the day before I posted and I'll probably keep following that format. When college starts idk how much time I'll have for personal art, so art for every chapter like in DOP is a big maybe, but I at least have these profiles for you!! I might try to always have something, but only as some nice sketches. Full-coloured art will depend how much time between work and school I can spare (yeah, I got a job >:)

Either that or I go crazy after I write the book and crank out some art before school starts. Whatever chaos I decide, I hope you like this chapter!! Enjoy!!

Part One: On the Horizon

Four years later...

"Now, Puffin, I want you to watch me closely."

The dragonet in question fixed her intelligent gaze on her father.

Prion smiled, reaching for the narwhal spear so she could see how he held it. He was about to show her, then thought against it. He offered it to his dragonet, who took it in both talons with gleaming eyes. He was glad to see her excited for once. The entire week leading up to her Third Task she had become melancholy and quiet. Teaching her how to throw a spear seemed to bring her passion back.

He smiled at Puffin. "You try it. Hold it as if you're about to throw."

She moved her talon to somewhere near the middle of the spear.

"You're already wrong." Puffin shot him a dismayed look, probably about to call him out on his teaching method, but Prion lifted a talon to silence her. He relaxed it to make it lay flat, then tilted the palm sideways. "Like this."

Puffin frowned but mimicked him and the spear slid out of her grip. She quickly retrieved it. "Is it supposed to do that?"

She did not hide her embarrassment well. Her movements were sharp and her cheeks were dusted with a light blue. Her moon-pale scales glittered in the morning sun, and Prion felt like the luckiest father in the world.

"Yes," he replied. Puffin stared at the spear in her talons, confused. Prion chuckled. "My father pulled the same trick on me when I was your age."

She grinned at him, showing her pure white teeth. Prion grinned back and pointed along the length of the narwhal tooth. "The spear has a balance point. When you hold it on the middle, it will fall because the butt of the spear is heavier than the tip. It's tricky because of the rope attached to the end, but..." he was about to show her where the balance point was, then stopped himself. "You try to find it."

His smart dragonet did it in a few seconds. She balanced it on her left talon again, then with her right she held the spear gently and moved it to find that place where the ends grew weightless and the spear held. She grinned again. She held the spear about the length of two talons from the middle. It stayed still.
