"Attention tributes attention," Cato and I jerk awake at the sound of the voice. "Commencing at sunrise there will be a feast tomorrow at the Cornucopia. This will be no ordinary occasion. Each of you needs something desperately. And we plan to be generous hosts."
I look at Cato, "The medicine."
"Oh God, Lissa. Please tell me you aren't planning on going alone. You know full well that this is a trap," Cato says.
"I know that, but you can't exactly come with me. You'd just end up slowing me down." I tell him with a smirk.
Cato gives a mock gasp and feigns hurt, "That had some burn to it, Fire Fairy!"
I shake my head and laugh as I lean forward and give him a kiss, "Does that make it better, my Warrior?"
Cato pulls me flush against his side, "There's no way I'm letting you go now."
I giggle and give a mock sigh, "Fine I'll stay." I block him from my side of the connection and formulate a plan of how I can get away without him noticing I'm gone.
{Time Skip Brought to you by Sarah's whining, "It's not fair!"}
I wait until Cato is dead asleep before I detangle myself from him and leave the cave with my bow and daggers in tow. After treading through the woods for a bit, I crouch behind some brush and watch the cornucopia for any signs of other tributes. Seeing a flash of red I stay put as Foxface comes into view and grabs a bag making a quick escape. Once Foxface escapes into the woods I look at the district 12 and 1 bags and rush to grab them before anyone notices me. Grabbing the bags I quickly turn and run. Turning the corner I'm met with a knife being thrown at me. I drop down into a slide avoiding the projectile and am thankfully rewarded with only a scratch on my forehead. 'Well, that's gonna wake up Cato.'
Damn, right it did. You are in trouble when you get back but for the love of God please be careful.
I ignore Cato for right now so that I can focus. I jump back to my feet and face Clove who has another knife ready. I pull out my own knife and threw it at her but she dodges and knocks me to the ground. We roll around fighting for the upper hand until Clove is on top of me holding a knife to my neck.
"Where's loverboy?" Clove taunts. "Oh, that's sweet. You were gonna help him by getting the bag and bringing it to him, right? You two were gonna make it out together and be happy little soulmates? You know, it's too bad that you couldn't help your little friend like you wanna help out, Cato." She taunts. I grunt and fight against her as she continues, "That little girl? What was her name again? Rue?"
"Shut the hell up! Leave her out of this, you bitch!" I yell in her face.
I hiss in pain as she presses the knife into my skin slightly, "You aren't in the position to be making demands, Sweetie. We killed her. That's just the fact of what happened and now we're gonna kill you too and big bad Cato as a result."
Right as she begins to bring the knife down to finish me off she is yanked to her feet by Thresh who appeared seemingly out of nowhere. Thresh throws Clove against the side of the cornucopia and gets in her face. "You kill her? You kill Rue?"
"No!" Clove answers in fear.
"I heard you!" Thresh shouts.
"Peeta! Peeta!" Clove yells in desperation.
"You said her name!" Thresh shouts again before slamming Clove into the cornucopia twice breaking her neck.
Thresh then turns his attention to me, "She was really excited to get to know you, Fairy. Thank you for looking out for her. I'll let you off this time. For Rue."
I nod and smile at him sadly, "I just wish I could have done more to protect her." Thresh nods his head in understanding but doesn't offer words of comfort knowing it won't help the guilt I will forever hold for not being able to protect the angel that was Rue. Thresh grabs his bag and runs off. After he's gone I grab the district 12 and 1 bags and run back to the cave where Cato is waiting for me in worry.
I enter the cave and hold up the bags grinning, "Mission accomplished!"
I sit next to Cato and he immediately begins inspecting my injuries, "I knew you would go and do this! Who'd you run into?"
I sigh, "Clove. But Thresh grabbed her off of me and killed her for being involved in Rue's death. I'm fine, Cato. Let's see what we got."I get out of Cato's arms and dig into the district 1 bag and find the medicine that Cato needed. I quickly apply that to Cato's wound to which he insists on putting a little on my forehead where Clove got me with her dagger. After digging through my bag I find food so we eat then go to sleep. 'Hopefully, our wounds will be healed in the morning. The end is drawing near and we need to be ready for the battle.'
