It was quiet. Too quiet. The only sound that could be heard was the eerie hum of the car's engine. The young girl who sat in the backseat was blankly staring out the window at the passing trees as she pressed a small towel against her lips. Her intense focus was interrupted by the feeling of the red liquid that stained the towel beginning to drip down her hand. Her usually expressive eyes seemed to be completely drained of all the emotion they once held as her gaze moved to the man conducting the vehicle. He was quiet. His face mirrored hers; there was no emotion present on his face. The girl could detect not even his breath. The man trained his eyes on the road, and he seemed to be focused, but the far-off look in his eyes told a different story. The girl let her eyes shut softly as she focused on her surroundings. Her blacked-out vision slowly filled with red swirls and she felt a strong heat engulf her body. She opened her eyes to observe him again. This time, she noticed the slightest twitch of his eyebrow and his fingers which were gripping the steering wheel tightly. His arms were trembling slightly. She could feel the burning red color practically dripping off of him. He was angry. The girl turned her eyes back towards the window, her breaths becoming slightly labored as she played back the events that had just happened in her mind. Her eyes slowly began to gain back the expressive glow that they normally held. The girl's arms were trembling slightly, mirroring the man's, except she was more of a thick and heavy blue rather than burning red. She glanced down at her arms. Purple splotches decorated her forearms like an intricate pattern on an art piece. She began tracing the bruises, flinching whenever her finger would touch a more sensitive patch of skin. A feeling of dread suddenly hung above the girl's head, her thick and heavy blue color quickly shifting to a seasick orange shade. Glancing back towards the window, the girl spotted bright lights heading towards the car from the side. Her stomach seemed to drop slightly at the sight. Opening her mouth to speak, the girl turned from the window towards the man.
"Da-"
The girl's body jumped as she was ripped from the memory. She was awake. Rapid and shaky breaths racked her body as she stretched her arm around to feel her back; her hand pulling away with a glisten of sweat covering her palm. Her door slammed open suddenly, startling the already petrified girl.
"Can you stop making so much noise? " The figure in the doorway seemed to regret the words as soon as his eyes observed her trembling and sweaty figure. The girl began to try and breathe deeply to slow her heartbeat. Noticing this, he stepped into her room, sitting on the edge of her bed: hoping that his presence would serve as some sort of comfort. Which, it did. The girl stretched out her shaky hand. The boy hesitantly reached for it with his own. The girl's eyes instantly shut. She focused her mind on his hand, his touch, his emotions. Her blacked-out vision was instantly filled with swirls of green. In an instant, her body was calm. "You really need to figure out how to fix this on your own," he spoke up again as she tried to catch her breath, "You can't count on me to calm you down." Silence followed his words as the girl's breathing began to return to normal.
