New girl

Katniss' POV

The hallways are filled with excited students, rushing around and greeting old friends. I walk through the hall nervously glancing at the different cliques, one seems to be the most popular, as most of the students swarm around it. I push my way through the crowd and head to my assigned locker. I turn the corner and head into a less crowded hallway.

I'm so focused on looking at the numbers on the lockers, trying to find mine, that I bump straight into someone, spewing his and my books all across the hallway floor.

"Oh my god, I'm so sorry, I don't know what I was thinking!" I say quickly apologising. He looks up and brushes his dark brown hair out of his eyes revealing his dark brown, questioning eyes.

"Oh that's fine, umm I'm Gale by the way," the boy said reaching out his hand.

I shake it.

"I'm Katniss, I'm new."

"Well, Katniss, do you want me to show you around."

"Oh yeah, that'd be great. Thanks."

I follow Gale down the hallway.

"So, Katniss what subject do you have first?" He asks breaking the awkward silence.

I quickly get out the timetable I got earlier this morning.

"Ummm.. English."

"Oh same," he said.

We arrive at a glass door at the end of the hallway. Gale opens the door and we walk into the classroom. Everyone is busy talking or texting on their phones and it's clear that there are different cliques. I stand at the doorway for a while, sinking in the scene, until Gale calls my name.

"C'mon Katniss I'll introduce you to my friends."

I timidly walk over to a large group at the back of the classroom.

"Hey guys this is Katniss, she's new," Gale says introducing me.

"Katniss, this is Tobias, Finnick, Clove, Cato, Glimmer, Peeta, Marvel and Uriah."

Tobias flashes me a wide smile, and I blush but smile back.

"Hey Katniss," said Clove twirling her brown hair.

" Hi."

I take a seat opposite Gale and Cato comes sit next to me. I flash a friendly smile at him, he stares at me for a while, eyes twinkling, but then all of a sudden as though he realises what he's doing he jerks back in his seat and avoids my eyes, but I see him looking at me every couple minutes.

English is pretty boring, we just listened to professor Abernathy rant on about comas. I'm still pretty confused about what Cato did, maybe he thinks I'm weird.

After chemistry and math we had lunch. I'm behind Gale and his group in the cafeteria line. They go of to sit at one of the tables. I'm about to set my tray down at an empty table when Gale comes over to me and half drags me to the table he's sitting at.

"What we're going to do? Eat lunch by yourself," he asks me. I smile to myself. I guess I'm part of their group now. I take a seat opposite Glimmer and Tobias moves from his seat next to clove to the seat next to me. Gale's about to sit in the other seat next to me when Cato pushes him out of the way and jumps into the seat. I'm taken back from these friendly gestures, but I'm grateful that they're trying to include me, at least I think that's what they're doing.

Gale scowls and takes a seat across me, next to Glimmer.

"So Katniss why did you move?" Uriah asks.

"Oh.. Um my mum found a great job around here, she's a doctor."

"That's cool," says Cato a little creepily because he stares at me for a while after saying it. Finnick clears his throat and Cato looks at him.

"So, why don't we have a sleepover at my place, you know to get Katniss and stuff," Clove says excitedly. It was clear she loved sleepovers.

"Sure." Everyone agrees and we agreed to meet at Clove's house around 7:00pm. I'm glad I've already made some friends here and I can't wait until the sleepover.
