Wetstar led the patrol of Brambleberry, Brightface, Snowyfeather, and Blazefang through the woods and stopped at the stream to mark the borders. Brambleberry glanced around and sighed, feeling the cold evening air brush through his fur. Brightface was staring over the lake at the Sandclan border with sad sapphire eyes. Snowyfeather padded up to her and started to talk to her softly.

"Thinking about something?" She asked softly. Brightface sighed and looked back out towards the border.

"I miss Pebblekit." She mewed softly. "And Pebblefoot." She added. Snowyfeather's eyes dimmed and she stared at her paws.

"I miss him too. There's not a day that goes by that I don't miss him." She whispered. Brightface looked at her and nodded her head silently. Both she-cats turned back towards the patrol and Wetstar started leading them back to camp.

Blazefang froze and his ears perked up, his eyes wide and his muscles tense. The others stared at him and started looking around.

"What is it, Blazefang?" Wetstar asked.

"I scent a-" there was a crash and a roar, and suddenly a badger burst through the trees and charged at the patrol.

"BADGER!" Brightface screeched and all of the cats ducked out of the way of the thundering beast. But Snowyfeather was too slow. She was picked up by the scruff and screeched with pain as the badger started to crush her in its jaws. Within moments she was limp and bleeding from her mouth, eyes glazed over and staring at nothing.

Wetstar let out a battle cry and the rest of the patrol charged the badger. Brightface slashed at its back legs, Brambleberry at its face and nipping at its front legs, and Blazefang clawing at its side. Wetstar leapt in the air and hurled himself at the badger. The beast looked up and grabbed the leader by his throat with his jaws and started to crush it with his teeth.

Wetstar gurgled and there was a crack before he fell limp with blood pouring from his mouth. Brightface let out a distressed wail and chomped down on the badger's leg. It let out a yowl of pain and fled, leaving the two bodies with the rest of the patrol. Blazefang and Brambleberry were standing by Wetstar and waiting for him to wake up when Brightface let out a small mew of grief and stared down at him with wide sapphire eyes.

"What's wrong?" Blazefang asked her. She looked over at them and her next words sent shock coursing through Brambleberry's veins.

"That was Wetstar's last life."
