Chapter Twelve
I got up to take care of my tray so I could start heading to class. Rex silently got up with me and I thought that this would be a good time as any to get a head start on trying to help Rose. We, as a group, discussed being there for one another when we saw that someone was struggling. It all came about when they saw me struggling, and after we decided to sort of bond ourselves together to make it through and graduate together, it just seemed like the sensible thing to do. I didn't think that it would be applicable so soon after my struggles, but I guess it was going to happen. She was taking a bunch of extra responsibility, just as I was. It was absolutely weighing on her and I didn't think I was the only one that could tell. I felt bad for her, so I saw if Rex would help her while I was focusing on this class. I didn't think that he or Rose had a class for a bit and hopefully he could talk to her and start putting her at ease a little.
"Hey Rex, how do you think Rose is doing?" I asked. "Oh, good. I'm glad that I wasn't the only one to notice. She seems like she is edgier today. Do you think she is having a hard time?" Rex said. He was obviously trying to play down the fact that Rose acting this way wasn't normal at all. Of everyone in the group, she was normally the one that had it together more than anyone else. "I know she met with Jax the other day to talk about her courses. I thought she was just trying to restructure the times that she needed to be doing classes, but I think maybe she is having a hard time keeping up with it all. She looks similar to how I did a little while ago. "Do you mind talking to her, I've got this class to go to, but I wanted to make sure that someone checked in on her." I said. "Absolutely, man. I don't mind at all. Maybe we can all try to check in on her tonight at dinner." Rex said. "Sounds like a great idea. Thanks, Rex, I really appreciate it." We both cleared our trays and gave each other our apparently normal goodbye now. A rough shoulder check. At first, I thought it would be a cool tradition, that was until his shoulder rocked me the first time. Sometimes I had a hard time mentally thinking through the fact that he was so much stronger than me.
Awakened by shoulder bumps, the coffee, and the excitement for the class for the day, I walked towards the exit and headed towards the intelligence hall. This is where Mr. Evergreen's class was, and even though I now had a couple of extra things on my mind, I was still very excited about the class today. Getting to spend time with Jax learning all this crazy stuff about Eden gave me high expectations for what Mr. Evergreen offers in my search for knowledge. He told us he was on several expeditions to Osiris in his career, so he should have lots of cool things to tell us.
The tip of the intelligence hallway was more exactly where his class was located, and it was actually at the edge of the trident building. Often the class that nobody wanted to take, but also the coolest classes, were at the end of the hallways. It was almost as if the barely extra work that is required to get down there every day paid off for the trainees that were really interested in the stuff that nobody else seemed to be. The walk gives me plenty of time to sort through all the questions that I would end up asking during class as well. The walk also let me check out the rest of the building. I loved learning new things about Trident. It gave me a sense of accomplishment to recognize a part of the building and know where I am.
I originally found the class by Jax's recommendation. It was a suggestion that he made when we met. He had insinuated that he was basically just teaching me the surface of the knowledge that he could on each of the subjects that he was trying to catch me upon. He told me that my fascination with the Eden, Oasis, and all the other possibilities that were out there would be high in any field that I wanted to go into. Every division could use the extra boost in the knowledge of the planets and it was certainly something that would look good come time for graduation if I made it that far. He also told me that even though there wouldn't be that many people in these classes it would be a great idea for me to make friends with a few of them because commonly these kids had spent their entire childhood interested in this stuff and would probably have a lot of really useful knowledge and insight to share with me on the subject. It also felt like he was telling me to take the class. All these things combined were more than enough to convince me to take the class. Meeting people outside of my little group might be nice as well.
