A/N: Hello, fellow Kyoru fans. Please read this prologue carefully as it will make the base of this story. Many things have been altered. Duh, it's an A/U. I'm sorry if that makes a few characters seem OOC since their relationship dynamics will be way different.
The trauma level is induced low due to the curse not existing, so definitely the characters aren't as traumatized or mentally abused as the original. But that doesn't mean trauma isn't there. What's Fruits Basket without some family horror?
If you like it, then read it. If you don't, then don't read it. Constructive criticisms are welcomed. Don't just be mean.
So anyway, I hope you all enjoy it.
It started out as a normal day.
His mom asked Kyo if he wanted to go to an amusement park. He said yes. She said that they would have to board a local train for that, so she took him to the station, holding his tiny hands tightly all the way. He winced when her grip would increase too much, but she wouldn't loosen it even if he asked. Reaching the platform, she whispered, "Goodbye," as she let go of his hands. He watched with wide, confused eyes as she marched towards the tracks as the train approached.
Kyo reached his hand out, wanting to ask where she was going, but no words came out. He was scared, surrounded by so many unknown people. He wanted her to hold his hand again. Before he could analyze anything further, she was throwing herself in front of the oncoming train.
In a blink of an eye, his mother was gone, and he was left standing cold on the platform, not knowing what just happened. But he knew one thing. That was, his mom wasn't coming back. Ever.
Kyo's vision whited out. And the next time he woke up, his life had already gone to hell.
His father, who had always been very aggressive and abusive, shoved all the blame on him, yelling things like it was Kyo's fault that his mother killed herself. But that wasn't the real reason. She was suffering from severe depression for a long time due to the abuse of her husband. Not being able to take the torture anymore, she gave up on her life. She wrote that in her last letter.
Though the cruel words his father uttered weren't true, they still stabbed his tiny heart like a permanent wound that would never heal.
Considering how much of a lunatic his father was, no one wanted to leave Kyo with him and Kyo himself was afraid to live with him. However, a kind man with long brown hair approached the five-year-old boy and asked him if he wanted to live with that man in his house.
Kids had a natural ability to tell if a man was good, and Kyo was sure that this ponytail man was really good, so he just nodded his head, still crying due to the sting of his father's words.
From then on, Kyo started living with that man named Kazuma Sohma. At first, Kyo wasn't very comfortable, but Kazuma was very patient with him. He took full care of him and never scolded him like his real father used to do. He would hug Kyo when he was scared due to the nightmares of his mother. He taught Kyo that he deserved to breathe the air from higher places, that he deserved the sky, and he shouldn't settle for anything less. The kindness Kyo was being shown, it was new and warm. So very comforting.
