The suns glare beat down on me, forcing my hand to raise above my eyes. Making a sort of protection for my eyes
"Sensei, can't we do this indoors? The heat will kill me faster than any demon could" a student complained
"Ah yes, of course we can. Every time you fight a demon, always ask it if you can fight in your preferred zone. Because that will go well" he sarcastically responded
"It's just training-"
"Let me stop you right there, those who don't take training seriously are usually the first to die out in the field" our teacher reprimanded
......
"We won't be doing anything too strenuous at the moment anyway, we will simply be gauging where you are at. After finding out your starting point, we can effectively set training regimes for each of you"
"Wait, different regimes for each of us?" A student seemed confused
"But of course, after all, everyone's physique and fighting style will be different from another's. Forcing you all to do the same thing will only hinder your advances. Though you will all have some things in common like basic sword mastery and breathing techniques."
Breathing techniques?
"Quite the preferential treatment, in the middle school branch we were all forced to complete the same regime" Sakayanagi stated
"That's because.... Well I have no clue. I don't regulate what is done to the middle schoolers, they're just some snotty brats anyway" our teacher taunted Sakayanagi
"Hmmm... perhaps they were. But it would do well to not underestimate those that have crawled their way from the bottom to the top" Sakayanagi eerily smiled at him
"But of course! Though if I recall correctly, you didn't exactly start from the bottom, did you? Sa-ka-ya-na-gi-Chan~" he retorted with his own smile
Sakayanagi simply stared at him, her eyes, betraying her smile.
"Any other questions?"
"Why did you say we were fucked? This doesn't seem too hard..." a naive student questioned
"You seem to have misheard me-"
"No, you definitely told us we were going to be fucked, and then proceeded to laugh at us"
"Oh no, I definitely said that. And laughed. And did a little dance. But that's besides the point"
He danced?
"I told you it wouldn't be too strenuous for the moment."
.....
"Now get ready you little shits, it's time to test yourself!" He laughed

As we all lined ourselves up on the red line we were guided to, Sensei began telling us what we were about to do.
"First things first. We're testing how well you can move. In order, we will test your speed, endurance, and agility while running."
"Ehhh, shouldn't we be testing our ability to fight" Someone complained
"We will be. But first, we have to see how well you can effectively move in order to escape. After all, nearly 58% of Demon Slayer deaths occurs within a Slayers first encounter with a Demon."
......
"Sorry, didn't mean to scare you guys. Though it's still good information to know. There's no shame in running from a fight if you truly have no chance of winning."
"Anyway, are you all ready? I don't really care actually. Your goal is Hiroko-Sensei's log lodge."
Isn't that the teacher in charge of disciplining the students?
"On your mark, get set....ehhh almost gotch- GO!"
With a strange cue, the sounds of 40 students hitting the ground running at once resounded in the empty courtyard.
Looking ahead I could see Koenji and Ryuuen leading the pack. Sakayanagi not too far behind them.
Was her walking cane just for show? Or was there some way for her to limit the restraints her injury put on her.
"Haven't figured it out yet?" Someone spoke next to me
Kamakiri...
"Are you talking about Sakayanagi?"
"Not just her, the other two are doing it in intervals as well"
Hmmm...... something done in intervals.... And all three of them are doing it?
"Breathing, isn't it?"
"Ding ding ding. It's actually quite surprising you knew that. Apart from you and those three up front, it doesn't seem anyone else knows about it."
If I recall correctly, only the elite knew about breathing techniques. It wasn't strange for Koenji to know about it, but Kamakiri, Ryueen, and Sakayanagi shouldn't know about it....
"Well, I won't dig in too deep. We all have things that are better left alone, don't we?" Kamakiri
He quickly picked up his pace and left me behind.
Looking around, I could see that I was somehow part of the top 10. Slowing my pace just before reaching the lodge I managed to slump down to 16th place at the finish line.
"Good job students, now that you've made it to the starting point, we'll begin testing your speed"
....what?
"Wait, what? Did you forget to time us Sensei?" Someone asked
"I ain't doing that shit again" Ryuuen was already satisfied at placing 2nd, once place above Sakayanagi
"Ehhhh.... I'm afraid it wasn't a choice thought" Sensei smiled
"Don't worry though, since some of you seem unwilling, let's give you some motivation!"
I have a bad feeling about this
"Your goal is the red line you were first at. Those who get caught will take up cleaning duty for a month!"
Without a chance to respond, Sensei slammed his fist on the wood lodge, creating a large crack into one of the wood logs.
"Good luck!" He cheered before disappearing into the shadows
.........
"WHO THE HELL TRIED DESTROYING MY OFFICE!" We could hear the rage of Hiroko-Sensei
Every student seemed to freeze in place and simultaneously come to the same conclusion...
Run...
