I said I'd protect you, right? -

Remember When We Met?

I stared at, who I figured was a girl, standing all alone in the hallway. She had a vanilla file in one hand, and it was obvious she was shaking. "Hey, y'know you sho . ." I spoke out, quietly, about to tell her to get back to class But then she raise her second hand, with the palm balled up and she punched the wall. I stood back and leaned over to see the damage of the wall, it was cracked.

That's pretty intimidating . .

I walked over to her as I heard her exhale loudly. I looked down at her short person for a moment. Her hair  was long and dyed with fated purple and pink colors. She wore a baggy hoodie that covered most of her torso that carried down to the top of her legs. From the looks of her tail and ears, she's a sheep demi-human but . .

Why the heck does she have horns if she's a sheep? Only males should have horns. Maybe I was wrong when assuming their gender.

"Hey." I said looking down at them. They looked up at me with light brown eyes that seemed really pissed off. "What." They answered in a pissy tone of voice. "I can only imagine your fist would be injured after punching that wall." I said, pointing at their unmoved fist. "I can take you to the nurses office if you want." They glares up at me in silence for a moment.

"What's my gender?"

I stood there silently after they asked that. I then scratched the side of my face and looked away. "Well, I think it's rude to assume someone's gender one how they look. But you seemed like a girl at first glance . ." I looked back at them and they were looking down with a small smile. "But," Their ear twitched before they looked back up at me, their smile had fated. "Now, you seem to be Nonbinary." They stared at me before looking down and smiling softly. "At least you didn't say boy . ." They spoke very quietly.

We both sat in the nurses office as the nurse had stepped out for a moment. But they were holding an ice pack against their knuckles. "I'm a girl, by the way." She spoke, breaking the silence. "Did you ever think I was a boy?" She asked as they looked up at me with those brown eyes. "Only when I saw your horns." She whined and dropped the ice pack on the ground and held their horns with her hands, covering it the best she could.

"These stupid horns make everyone think I'm a boy." I saw her hand begin to shake and her eyes narrowed and her lip quivered as if she was about to cry. "Well, I think your horns look fine." I said as I leaned over and picked up the ice pack.

"I can help people realize you're a girl if you'd like." She took her hands off her horns and stared at me with widened eyes. "Are you sure?" I nodded gently as I handed her the ice pack. "Of course. I wouldn't want to get mis-gendered for all my high school experience." I said with a smile. "Thank you." Her lips curved into a sweet smile as we stared at each other.

♤~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~♤

"Remember that Cash?" I looked over at the slumped over girl by my side. "Yes, I remember. That's when I met you in freshman year." I said as I looked back at my book. "That was so long ago. I can't believe we're already seniors! One step closer to college." The goat demi-human spoke with a loud tone, much different then what she had before. I sighed and looked at the ground.

That was the biggest mistake of my life.

"Cash, are you doing anything today after school?" The girl insisted as she sat by my side. I looked at her silently before I nodded. "No you don't, you liar." She said nudging my side. "You can just say you don't wanna hang out." She throw back her arms and leaned backwards on the mulch and dirt of the tree behind us on the bench. "Seems like you never wanna hang out anymore. Do you even want me around?"

No. But unfortunately my parents have taken too much of a liking towards you for me to just drop you like nothing.

"I'm just tired Fawn. Nothing more." I said as I took a large exhale before I looked up at the sky through the parting leaflets. "You're always tired. You're turning into an old man and you're hardly even twenty yet." I felt her wrap her arms around my torso as her head rested on my back shoulder.

"Fawn, remember you can't do that long." I reminded her as I felt her nuzzle closer to me. "I know, I know. Shut up." She mumbled out quietly as she sat still for a moment before she released her grip onto me then sat back. "Are you excited?" She asked with a nudge. "Nope." I replied quickly and coldly. "I am. I can't wait until I get out of this hellhole and make a living." She said as she picked up her feet and held them close to her body, covering the front of her torso.

"Cash, will you leave me when we go to college?" She asked as her voice got quiet and muffled a bit. "Maybe. Only time will tell." I said, honestly as I looked at the balled up girl next to me. Her fingers then squeezed her arms and she placed her head on her knees, hanging her head down and covering her face.

"I'm sorry." I sighed and stared at her before I closed my book and scooted closer to her. "We talked about this Fawn." I said before I rubbed her back. "You need more confidence, y'know that?" I heard her exhale loudly before her ears dropped downwards. "I know."
