"Okay, once Darcy has gotten past Hayward's firewall, Y/n will move to 'sector B' of the base and download the files directly from there. Once you've gotten them completely transferred, Jimmy will be set to give us the 'okay' to regroup back here."
"Got it, Rambeau. Grab the files, don't get caught."
"And Y/n, Hayward's gonna be on your ass so be smart about this. He's got it out for you."
"Whatever. That jackass knows better than to try anything with me."
"Think smart. See you soon."
"Don't do anything stupid. Nothing dangerous, okay?"
"C'mon Darcy, me? Stupid? Dangerous? Never."
"Fuck you. I'm serious, Y/n. just... be careful. With Hayward on your case-"
"You worry too much. See you in a bit."
Just as the last words rang through her head, Y/n was brought out of the memory that played in her dreams. She dragged her hand along her face, clearing her eyes of sleep as the morning sunlight poured onto her. She let her hands rest behind her neck as she shifted straight up against the house, opening her lungs to the fresh breeze as she adjusted to being awake.
It wasn't like Y/n had gotten much sleep anyway, not after everything that happened the night before. Not after the way she left things with Wanda. The more she thought, the more regret filled her stomach as she slumped back against the house. All Y/n really wanted, was for someone to listen to her. For someone to really be there, instead of having to talk to herself. For someone to want to listen to her. Wanda gave that to her, and she pushed her away. She pushed her away, just as she had always done.
Reaching into her pocket, Y/n closed her hand around the small pocket knife she had shoved away. She examined it in the soft light, her eyes tracing over the small symbol of friendship against the handle. Her heart ached in her chest; all she wanted was to see them. To make sure they were okay... to make sure they were together. Her head fell back and she forced her eyes shut as she kept from letting herself slip any more than she had let herself last night.
Although, no matter how hard she tried to push it away, no matter how desperate she was not to let herself slip, the guilt that had circled in her never seemed to go away. Taking a deep breath of the fresh air, she let her eyes fill up with the sun that shone down on the small porch and pulled herself up.
There she was, pushing open the door as quietly as she possibly could. The warmth that moved through the walls of the house was enough to put a smile on anyone's face. Y/n slipped her hands into her sweater pocket as she studied the living space. It was quiet, calm enough where even the smallest movement would ring through her ears. It was nice, something she never thought she'd even think about the small house. Before she even realized what she was doing, her feet were carrying her to the kitchen, pulling open one of the cabinets to retrieve two small mugs.
"Y/n?"
Who knows how much time had passed when Y/n finally snapped back to reality, a soft voice filling up the quiet house. When Y/n turned to the source of the noise, her eyes locked with Wanda's as she stood in the doorway, slightly pulling on the sleeves of her deep red sweatshirt. She hadn't even realized what she'd been doing until she followed Wanda's eyes to her own hands, holding two freshly made cups of coffee against her palms.
"I uh...- I don't know-" Y/n choked on her own words. "...Coffee?"
Wanda's face fell slightly in shock. Her brows raised and her eyes wide just enough to know that is not what she expected Y/n to say. Taking a beat, she tilted her head almost confused, the corners of her lips tilting just enough for Y/n to make out the girl unknowingly hiding back a smile.
"Uh, yeah. That would be great, actually." Wanda slowly stepped towards Y/n.
Y/n stayed frozen as Wanda gently took one of the cups from her hand, a shiver rushing down her spine as their fingers brushed against each other. Wanda tracked to the other side of the island, leaning on her elbows as she propped herself up against the counter. Both girls stood silently for a moment, standing opposite each other, yet both too afraid to look the other in the eye.
Wanda cleared her throat as she drew small shapes against the warm mug between her hands, "How long have you been awake?" Her voice was soft as she finally raised her eyes to Y/n's.
"Oh uh," Y/n kept her eyes down on her hands, "Not long." She lied as she looked out the window. The sun had fully risen from behind the mountains, shining down on the snow that coated each point.
"So, how are you feeling?"
The part of the lake that could be seen from the small window was rushing in the banks, and the windows that sat at both sides of the door were open just enough to let the cool breeze sweep into the house. Once again, the small house leaving Y/n to slip back into her thoughts.
Wanda furrowed her brows, "Y/n?"
"Hm? Sorry, what did you say?" Y/n was pulled back from her crowded mind.
Wanda paused, her eyes attached to Y/n as she held the warm cup between her hands. All she wanted to do was go back to last night. To hear Y/n talk about her friends... to see her smile. To see even the slightest glow in her face when she would recall a funny memory. It was so different. Seeing such a change in Y/n. Seeing even a glimpse behind her walls and into her heart. It wasn't much, a regular person probably wouldn't have even noticed- but Wanda did. Wanda noticed the way her shoulders relaxed and her voice became lighter the more she talked about them. The more she let herself be vulnerable. It was so different, and Wanda wanted nothing more than to see it again.
"Oh, I just- how are you? After last night I mean..." Wanda looked down to her hands, twisting the gold bands that still remained on her ring finger.
"Wha- What?" Y/n stumbled with her words, even though she knew exactly what Wanda said.
"I just- hearing you talk about them last night... they mean so much to you. I didn't mean to overstep, I just thought that-"
"Don't be sorry, okay? You're not the one who should be sorry." Y/n interrupted Wanda's stuttering, her voice straight and clear.
Wanda went quiet, watching the muscles in Y/n's face contract with each other in emotions she couldn't quite read. She had always been so good at reading people, so why was this so much harder?
The two didn't exchange another word for the remainder of the morning. However, although they didn't speak to each other, all the girls could think about was the other. Wanda's magic stayed with her, never venturing out to Y/n. Almost as if she was unable to go into the stubborn girl's mind. Even if that was the only thing she wished she could do. To catch a glimpse, just a peek at what thoughts circled in her head. Why was she so different?
Y/n stayed quiet, her thoughts roaring in her brain as she stayed glued to the small chair that faced the window. She played with the pocket knife in her hand, desperately trying to focus on anything but the witch she was deserted with. Nothing seemed to work. It was all her.
And as the morning passed on, without a single word, this only made the thoughts in their heads beg louder to be heard.
