My father had come home that evening after work and he was initially surprised that my mother and I had welcomed this girl he'd never seen before to permanently stay with us, but after we explained her situation to him, he was just as welcoming, if not more. Y/N let out some more sobs at that, but I didn't blame her. This was probably the first time she'd actually felt...wanted.
It took a few weeks, but eventually, Y/N got accustomed to living with us. We gave her the spare room and my mother even personalized it so it would really feel like her bedroom. She eventually dropped the formalities, but still called my parents 'Mr. and Mrs. Choi' because calling them 'Mom and Dad' seemed a little foreign to her, though no one took any offence in that.
It was December now and Y/N was still wearing one of her signature sweaters as we walked to school. In fact, she'd never gotten out of the habit even when she stayed with us. One day, when she knew her dad would be at work, the two of us snuck into her house and brought back as many of her belongings as we could, which included all her books, some clothes, her bag and school supplies, and a large bin which held a bunch of sweaters. I told her we could buy new ones if she wanted, but she told me they were her mother's, so she kept them. My mother had told her she needn't go back, but Y/N insisted on bringing some of her stuff back. There were some things she'd miss too much and she didn't expect us to buy everything for her (even though we were willing to do so anyway).
"Your birthday's almost here," she said to me as we walked together. I noticed lately she'd been smiling a lot more and even now, she had one on her face, which made me smile too. "Just a few more days, huh?"
I nodded. "Mhm. What are you getting me? Socks?"
She laughed and swatted my arm with her overly long sleeve. "No, and why would I tell you, goofus? You'll just have to wait and see."
"Better be something good."
"I said you'll have to wait and see."
The two of us just laughed and walked to school, my group of friends approaching us as we did.
Over the past few weeks, Y/N had been introduced to my friends too and they all got along well and pretty fast. They teased us a lot—Y/N and me—thinking we were dating and it got annoying, but other than that, we all were a pretty close group.
"Look, it's our group couple!" Beomgyu gushed as we arrived.
I rolled my eyes and Y/N turned pink a little, but neither of us decided to verbally acknowledge his remark.
"Y/N's invited to your birthday party, right?" Beomgyu asked and Taehyun thwacked his nape in response.
"She lives at his house, idiot," he said.
"Right, right, my bad!"
We all laughed at this and made our way inside the school as the bell rang, Y/N and I heading to math class while the others went to their own respective classes.
And I was just glad we could walk in together instead of me waiting for her, hoping that she'd show up and wouldn't be trembling in fear.
