Authors note.
This first chapter is longer since I pulled from Heir of Fire Chapter 3. I did change up some of the conversation/ deleted/ added information. So it's not the exact same.Celaena POV
Celaena sat down next to the captain of the guard for the first time since the night she killed Archer Finn. That night she'd made sure him and Dorian were safe and taken care of. Then she banished them from her chambers. She'd almost said to much when she informed Chaol of her Fae heritage. She could tell Chaol had wanted to ask her more questions. But she couldn't answer them. Not then, or now. There had been talk about sending her to Wendlyn to dispatch of the royal family. Chaol himself had even presented the idea. The fool.
However the king had liked the idea, but needed her here till the end of the season for whatever reason.
Dorian and Chaol hadn't talked since but Chaol gave her a sideways look before continuing his conversation with Dorian. Clearly there was something happening tonight.. Ress started to ask her a question when the guards struck their swords against their shields to announce a person of importance arriving.
Chaol positioned himself at the bottom of Dias of the high table. Informing Celaena to go behind them in the shadows. That way she could watch everything. She was in a simple day dress but her weapons where hidden enough. She had half a mind to just go ahead and kill the king while she was back there. But then he though of the threats to Nehemias family. Even those of Chaol.
Elena had seemed to think she was the only person that could defeat the king. Such blasphemy. She'd been running from destiny for over 10 years now. She wasn't about to start dealing the fates hands now.
The doors of the dinning room opened. The General of the North. Aedion Ashryver was prowling towards them. Smirking at them all.
He was something else. Overwhelming was more like it. Towering and heavily muscled, Aedion was every inch the warrior rumor claimed him to be. A white wolf pelt was slung across his broad shoulders, and a round shield had been strapped to his back—along with an ancient-looking sword. The Swort of Orynth. That sword wasn't supposed to belong to him. But this wasn't the place to confront him.Even though Aedion was grinning like a fiend he was sniffing his soundings. No doubt scenting everyone around them. Then his face went slack. But he quickly recovered as he started conversing with the King. She needed to get out of the dinning room as soon as possible.
Celaena started to weave her way through the pillars towards the grand doors.
"I expected you a month ago." She paused. Please don't let the king try to kill Aedion right now. She didn't know what she was would do.
Dorian caught her eye as she stopped by the last pillar. Still giving herself time to run if needed but she needed to see what would happen first. Dorian have her a quizzical look before turning his attention back to the Dais.
Chaol POV
Aedion actually had the nerve to shrug. "Apologies. The Staghorns were slammed with a final winter storm. I left when I could."
Every person in the hall held their breath. Aedion's temper and insolence were near-legendary—part of the reason he was stationed in the far reaches of the North. Chaol had always thought it wise to keep him far from Rifthold, especially as Aedion seemed to be a bit of a two-faced bastard, and the Bane—Aedion's legion—was notorious for its skill and brutality, but now ... why had the king summoned him to the capital?
The king picked up his goblet, swirling the wine inside. "I didn't receive word that your legion was here."
"They're not."
