Matt P.O.V.

"Look at the stupid little nobody." A boy snickered from my left as I walked down the corridor of Whammys, playing on my PSP without looking where I was going. It was a cold autumn day, the outside world encased in a globe of thick fog and darkening leaves. The summer sun was hidden away, awaiting a day where it could shine through like a beacon of beauty once again. I didn't see the point in being out there playing sports- it was a hassle that served no purpose than to try and embarrass us all when we messed up. An L would never mess up, my Gym teacher's words echoed through my mind as I passed another numbskull kid who uttered something spiteful under her breath, even at sports.

What a load of bullshit.

Taking a deep, unnecessary breath, I turned a corner towards Mello's and my room. My focus was on kicking ass on my game, not on the kids around me. And yet still, I could hear them loud and clear. It was pretty distracting, really.

"That's third? Please, I could beat that nerd in my sleep!" A boy, a bit younger than me, boasted to his friends from my right who whooped and cheered like they were in some sort of cult and their leader had suggested world domination.

"Yeah!"

"I know you could, J! You're the best!"

"Did you hear? He's friends with Mello." A girl whispered dramatically to her friend just ahead on my left. Her friend gasped.

"No way! That is friends with The Mello?!"

"I know right! I didn't believe it either! He looks like such a freak!"

"A dumb ugly one you mean!" They burst into giggles. I rolled my eyes and kept walking. Just because I didn't show a reaction to their idiocy didn't mean I was some heartless guy. It hurt hearing those things, really. I thought after a year they would've gotten used to me. Guess not.

"Ugh." Someone scoffed and moved out of the way as I walked towards them, their brown eyes filled with disgust, intrigue and jealousy. "Don't look now, it's him."

They're just jealous that you rose to third without trying, Roger's words echoed as I passed them, my game now paused. Ignore them, Matthew.

"Really?! He has the nerve to not even look at us?" Someone else hissed before my shoulder was grabbed. I stopped, my goggles banging against my collarbone. Slowly I looked up to meet the unreadable, steel grey eyes of a boy three years older. He looked at me with an arrogantly annoyed expression like that of an adult who was stuck talking to an antisocial infant. "Oiy, third, what do you think you're doing?"
