"I... Just... What?" Like a bumbling idiot- yep, real cool Matty- I stuttered, my eyes wide with horror and confusion. Who would do that? Seriously? What would be the point in all that? Why would someone decide it was a smart idea to unbarricade the door?
Mello sighed, his eyes glancing over to the sleeping children. I felt like the night sky held a thousand eyes- all gazing down at us with judgement and sick, twisted delight. I could still taste the air filled with the scent of the decaying Carriers. Death and destruction followed them wherever they went- the weather would have no influence on them. We should've known that. We should've been better. Stronger. Smarter.
Even the smartest aren't invincible in the apocalypse.
We'd just gotten lucky.
"Look, I don't know alright? All I heard was fucking screeches of the objects of the barricade being removed and then that... that noise..."
Gnawing jaws. Clenching teeth. Hungry groans. Shuffling feet.
The sounds of death.
I met his eyes, my heart thudding in my chest. It was starting to come back to me properly now, even as I write this. I could remember how they flooded the place- ripped limbs from bodies, their own lives in their perspective. I suppose we weren't too different, us and them. We were all just trying to survive. I could still remember Ash's and Harmony's screams. They would stay with me, just like Sam's. "So what? We keep running with the kids, our friends and family dead? In a second everything changed Mel- what if that happens again?"
Disasters don't build up. In a split second, life will never be the same again.
"It won't."
"And how can you be so sure?"
"Because... I... Look, I'm in charge here. I'll sort something out, got it?!"
Yeah. Right. Gotcha.
The wound was too fresh. The idea of losing Mello too, or the kids... My eyes slid towards the sleeping beauties. I would never lose them. I'd rather die first.
"Got it, boss."
"For now... we shoot down the sons of bitches that killed our friends and family."
Rolling my eyes, I looked down at our pitiful excuse of entertainment. A TV with no signal. The white noise was beginning to give me a headache. Briefly it reminded me of something so ironic- white noise always made me think that something, somewhere was trying to communicate with us, like an angel or God. But what good could they do us now? The virus had killed everyone. Everything. God was a sadistic bastard with a whole chessboard to play with, and the angels were his knights, bishops, castles. We were just pawns, there to be used and manipulated. And now there were only the four of us pawns left. It was our turn to play. The disease, the black pieces, were taunting us. And we pitiful humans knew our place. Our place to die. I turned the TV off.
