"Auntie Katelyn!"
I turned and smiled when I saw Abby bolting her way towards me. She dodged past people in the mall, ignoring Jeffory calling out for her stop.
"Auntie Katelyn!" She exclaimed again, wrapping her arms around my waist as she finally reached me.
Tightly, I hugged her back.
"Irene you've grown taller since I last saw you!" I exclaimed.
"Well it has been almost a year Auntie Katelyn."
"It has?" I bent down to her height. "Irene it feels like it was just yesterday that I last saw you and your dad...Time flies."
"You missed my ninth birthday." She folded her arms with a puppy dog look in her eyes.
"Abby!" Jeffory lightly scolded.
I chuckled softly, trying not to look at Jeffory, then sent Abby a sweet smile.
"Well, it must be luck that I brought you the present then." I handed her a small gift bag, along with a bigger present which she immediately lay beside her, saving it for last. "I know it's four months late but better late than never am I right?"
Abby gave me another hug then began opening up the card along with the individual gifts in the bag whilst I stood up and looked at Jeffory. Our eyes finally met and we both exchanged awkward smiles, taking a few moments to reintroduce our minds to the others features, which for some unknown reason seemed to have changed so much; almost as if we were old elementary school friends reuniting for the first time in years, before we hugged.
His arms around me felt familiar, comforting. Immediately my bodies first reaction was to relax and then after that my minds was to mentally kick myself. I wanted to bring up the fact I was with Travis as soon as possible but didn't know how.
On cue with a squeal from Abby, he let me go and looked down at her. I smirked when he glared at me.
"You got her that penny board?" He crossed his arms. "Seriously Katelyn."
"Well she's been asking for it for years now and as her favourite Auntie, I felt it my duty to finally provide her with it." I beamed proudly.
"Oh Irene...She's going to be covered in bruises." Jeffory sighed.
"You seriously underestimate both your daughters abilities on a penny board and my abilities as a teacher." I was now smirking proudly.
"Oh thank you Auntie Katelyn!" Abby squealed and hugged me tightly around the waist again.
"You're very welcome." I said as I hugged her back. "Now, shall we go and get something to drink before we start our walk around the mall for you late birthday shop?...Also please say yes because I didn't have my coffee this morning."
Abby and Jeffory both laughed, Abby soon running off towards the Starbucks in the food court. I watched Jeffory pick up the small pieces of wrapping paper she had left on the floor and place them in the gift bag before we both began following after her.
Abby ordered a deluxe hot chocolate and Jeffory ordered a green tea whilst I ordered myself a caramel iced latte. Once we all had our drinks and Abby and I had our cake pops, we sat down in a booth in the corner of the food court, allowing us to be out of the way and in more of the quiet area.
A silence blew over us, Abby listening to music in earbuds using Jeffory's phone and neither Jeffory nor I knew exactly what to say now that they 'hello's', 'how are you's' and awkward reuniting hugs had been said and done.
Jeffory finally gulped down a lump in his throat and broke the deafening silence.
"S-So how was starlight?" He wondered.
