I had to hand it to Mr. Gavon. With his black pinstriped suit, I could have almost mistaken him for a human, if it wasn't for the flame tattoo peeking out from under his suit that flickered like real fire. I stared at them, mouth open, but Mr. Brady didn't seem to notice anything as he gestured for me to take a seat.
"Billie, these are representatives from the Irongate Therapeutic Boarding School, and they have an exciting opportunity for you," Mr. Brady continued, still grinning maniacally.
Therapeutic Boarding School. That had to just be a nice way of saying a school for delinquents.
"They are willing to offer you a place! Starting immediately. Isn't that wonderful?" His smile was getting creepy now. I glanced at the officials to see if they were concerned about this, but they looked perfectly calm. Ms. Waverunner was smiling softly, her gaze never leaving Mr. Brady.
And that was when it finally clicked.
"They would like you to start immediately so you don't get too far behind your classmates. Of course, there's some paperwork we need to fill out, and your mother needs to be advised ..."
"The paperwork has been taken care of and Billie's mother has already agreed to the transfer," said Ms. Waverunner.
Liar, but I wasn't planning on calling her out on it.
"The paperwork has already been taken care of!" Mr. Brady repeated cheerfully.
Mr. Gavon stood up. "If that's everything, we would like to get started immediately. We will escort Billie off the premises."
Mr. Brady just nodded, grinning from ear-to-ear and staring straight forward. Both Mr. Gavon and Mr. Waverunner went to the door without a second thought. I started to follow, then stopped, staring back at Mr. Brady
"Are you sure he's okay?" I asked.
"It required a powerful enchantment to convince him to release you to us immediately without any proof of credentials, but he should recover in a few hours."
Mr. Brady didn't seem aware that we were talking about him. He just sat there, staring straight forward with that plastered smile.
There wasn't anything I could to help him though, so with a cringe I followed them.
Hunter stood up as we walked out, staring at the officials in confusion. That raised a good question. How had they known where to find me? And how did they have such perfect timing?
Hunter looked at me and started to say something. Ms. Waverunner's eyes flashed and Hunter's mouthed snapped shut. Slowly, he sat back down. He almost looked afraid as we walked passed him, but then the door closed.
"So ... what was that all about?" I asked as we walked down the deserted hallway.
"It's the cover story we are arranging for you," Mr. Gavon said. "Due to the official charges being placed on you, it will be recorded that you we offered a place at Irongate, and that you accepted and were transferred immediately."
"What charges?"
"We reversed the charm your mother placed on the humans and the police, and you have been formally charged with willful destruction of property," Ms. Waverunner said. "Now, your little antics might rile them up again, which will make things more complicated, but we'll handle it."
I started to ask how they would handle it, but then decided I didn't want to know.
"So, what happens next?"
"Isn't it obvious?" Ms. Waverunner said, "We're taking you to the Realm."
My heart leapt, but before I got to excited I asked, "Am I going to the Academy? Or ..."
