IF IT WERE POSSIBLE, EVAN ASTOR WOULD BE NEITHER A KOOK NOR A POGUE. Her parents have money ─ lot's of it, at that ─ and yet have never bothered to involve themselves or their daughter in any of that cliche, outdated bullshit, and Evan is just fine with that. She's humble, not spoiled. She's grateful, not bratty. She's polite, not arrogant. And as far as perfect goes, the Astor family of Figure Eight are pretty damn close.

The only problem is, that's not how it works. Kooks and Pogues don't get along. You can't be neither. Facts say ─ the Astors are Kooks. A shit tonne of money: check. High-class jobs: check. Figure-eight estate: check. And yet, unlike any of their neighbours, or work friends, or even close relatives, the Astors don't like that. They want to be viewed as normal as possible and as approachable as possible. To all ends of the island. But again, that's not how it works.

Jane and Thomas Astor have since retreated to their rich, lawyer friends, as they will never be any more than their yacht, and terrace balcony, and dining parlour. And as sad as that is, it must do. The Kooks aren't the nicest of people. Sure, on the outside, cute as a button, all of them. But pay attention for longer than a brief "hello!" and all the ugliness unveils itself. Jane and Thomas get by.

But to their daughter, Evan, getting by with the most insufferable group of stuck-up, well-off high school kids, won't do. Fortunately, Evan chose her one friend long before social status mattered.

JJ Maybank is quite literally the reason for Evan Astor's existence. She loves his carefree lifestyle and envies a life like his ─ doing whatever he wanted, without having to worry if Daddy's law firm will hire him when he comes of age. She loves how they "defy the island's two tribe tradition" and are the best of friends despite their differing bank numbers. Of course, being eleven, when they met for the very first time, neither Evan nor JJ quite understood the technicalities of being a Kook or a Pogue, but Evan still marvels at their modern take on life.

Evan wondered why he befriended her in the first place. She was quiet, most likely had her head in a book, and her first words to him were probably some geeky shit about the weather and how unlikely it was for that time of year. And yet, four years later, he hadn't left her side.
