It was a really early morning for Allison that 24th of November, but she was so excited to be back to working with Charlie after three weeks that she didn't even mind that her nieces were running around naked, not giving in to being dressed for school.
"Girls, I'm going to count until three. If you're not with Aunt Allison getting changed, you don't get your iPads," Eve started counting from the bathroom where she was putting Alex's hair in a braid.
The girls took half a second to get to their aunt, and they were dressed and ready in no time. While they were having breakfast, Eve and Allison sat on the sofa, drinking their cups of coffee while having a quick chat.
"How are you doing?" Allison asked, looking for a sincere answer from her sister-in-law, who she could see was extremely tired yet still looking incredibly beautiful.
"I'm tired," she laughed with sad eyes, "And I miss your brother too much, but I'm getting through it."
"I think you're the strongest person in the world," Allison said sincerely, looking at those three little, really cute monsters having breakfast.
"I'm making it work, which is enough," she looked over at the clock on the wall and got up quickly. "We're late, everyone shoes on and into the car."
"Do you want me to drive them to school, Eve?" Allison asked, seeing how stressed Eve had become in a few seconds.
"I thought Charlotte was picking you up here."
"She is, but I'm sure she would have no problem getting us to the school."
Eve ended up saying yes, and Charlie wanted to kill her partner when she saw her standing on the doorstep with three children's seats ready to be placed in her car.
"Charlie," Alex screamed, running into her arms. Charlie hugged her tightly, giving her a kiss on the forehead followed by a hug from each one of the twins.
"I'm so sorry," Ali whispered, leaving a quick kiss on her cheek while taking the car seats into the backseats.
They ended up being late, but as it was Charlie's first shift back, she was excused. They had been driving around in silence for a few minutes waiting for a call to come in.
"I missed you," Allison said sincerely, looking at her partner, who was very focused while driving down the busy streets.
"You've come over to my house every single day, Benzinni," she laughed with that beautiful smile that made Allison go crazy. "You couldn't have possibly missed me."
"You're saying it like you didn't want me to go over every single day," she pretended to be offended, which only caused Charlie to laugh even more.
"I never said that."
"Oh Allison, I'm bored to death. Please come and watch Friends with me... please, I'm begging," Allison pretended to be Charlie calling her basically every single day of her leave.
She received a soft slap from her when they reached a red light.
"You're so funny," Charlie pretended to laugh but quickly turned her smile into a frown making Allison burst into tears laughing.
They answered a few minor calls, and anyone who saw them could see they were really happy to be working back together after almost a month apart. But that happiness was soon going to be transformed by a really disturbing call.
"All units, 10-13. We have received a distressed call from a very young child. Screams for help could be heard in the background. Please wait for confirmation on the location" They both went dead quiet, waiting for the location to come through so they could help the child as fast as possible. "Location confirmed. 2161 Madison Ave Bridge. Apartment Building 3B. Approach with caution."
