Ms. Ruby who realized the tension between us two decided to break the silence.
''Okay, that is enough class!!!! Let's get back to our lesson.''
I almost died out of embarrassment!! I just want to back home and play with my ukelele instead. The girl who helped me find my class earlier whispered to my ear,
''Hi, I'm Lila.""
I could barely respond and felt words catch in my throat but managed a ''hello'' back. Ruby then talked me through how the timetable worked, and said I could come to her any time I needed. Mrs. Ruby was so far my favorite teacher. She was goofy and easy to get along with. An hour later, she dismissed us and everyone rushed to the door, chatting with their friends.. I wore my jacket again and hid my face with the hoodie, hoping he doesn't notice me.
Then i heard Lila's voice behind me. ''Well, we survived. Do you feel inducted?''
My brain wasn't clearly working at that moment and had no idea what to say so I smiled at her widely and laughed it off. ''Some of us are meeting up for lunch actually,'' Lila said, adjusting her dress. There's this place called Shack o' Cheese. You can come if you like?
I could've kissed her. I mean not in a weird way. Because, had it been up to me, I'd never get to hang out with her again even though I was really desperate to. I was in a state of euphoria and yelled out yes. Anyways, she took her cap off and waved goodbye. ''See you at 2.''
''Goodbye,'' I called after her, watching her blazing orange hair merge into the chaos of new students getting lost in the corridors. ''Thank you so much,'' I muttered to myself.
I was so excited to hang out with Lila during lunch that I cycled back home to take a quick shower. As I was about to leave the house, my mother grabbed me by the arm firmly. She then pleaded me not to go. She told me in sign language that she has to meet up with someone important and i'd have to be by her side to translate the whole conversation. I was disappointed as Lila was the first person to invite me to hang out with her and i will not be able to do so.
I cried in the inside but tried all my best to hide my disappointment as i didn't want my mother to feel bad and guilty throughout the day. I wasn't mad at my family that they used me as their hearing aid and translator as we were to too poor to buy an aid for everyone..
I messaged Lila to inform her that I was unable to go due to something urgent. I pressed send and watched one tick turn into two ticks. Then I put my phone back into my front pocket and ran to mom.
''Oh, how fun it would have been with Lila right now,'' I said to myself....
