"Ashton called me," Lindsey said to Jamie later that day. "he invited us to a party at his house," before Jamie could protest, she continued. "nothing like last night! Just sort of a...I don't know...normal party."
"Do I have to come?" Jamie sighed. "I really don't feel up to it."
"Please!" Lindsey pleaded. "I really want to go but I don't want to go by myself."
"I don't know...Luke will probably be there. It'll be awkward."
"Is this really about Luke?" Lindsey asked. "Stop being a wimp. It'll be fine."
"Fine!" Jamie gave in. "I guess I'll go, but only if you promise we can go home when I say so."
"Sure," Lindsey agreed. "but don't pull something like say, 'let's go home,' as soon as we walk in the door."
"I won't." Jamie promised.
"Yay! Let's go get ready!" Lindsey squealed, grabbing Jamie's arm and tugging her towards the staircase.
"Okay, I can walk by myself!" Jamie laughed, tugging her arm out of Lindsey's grip.An hour later they were climbing into Lindsey's car and heading towards Ashton's house. They talked about nothing, and then the conversation somehow made its way to Ashton.
"So, do you think things might actually work out between you and Ashton?" Jamie asked. "I mean, do you think you might want to start a relationship?"
"I don't know," Lindsey shrugged. "You know me. I don't really date. But if I like him enough, I guess I can't just ignore it."
"Is he nice?" Jamie asked.
"Yeah, he's nice..." From the way Lindsey was speaking, it sounded like 'nice' might not necessarily be a good quality.
Jamie wanted to ask Lindsey more about Ashton, but they had come to Ashton's house, so she guessed she would have to figure it out herself.
Ashton opened the door when Lindsey knocked, and he smiled when he saw her. "Hey, come in."
He led them to what Jamie assumed was the living room, and gestured for them to sit down. Lindsey took a seat beside Ashton, and Jamie was forced to take the only available space, right next to Luke.
Lindsey was already engaged in conversation with Ashton and Michael and Calum were talking as well. Jamie glanced over at Luke. He was looking at her.
"Um, can we talk...somewhere?" He asked, talking quietly enough so that none of the others could hear.
Jamie nodded.
They both stood up, and Jamie followed Luke, assuming he knew where he was going. Michael wolf whistled and said something along the lines of, "use protection," but more derogatory, and Luke flipped him off over his shoulder before pulling Jamie through a door and closing it behind him.
Jamie looked around and saw that they were in some kind of hallway.
"Sorry about them," he muttered. "So anyway..." He bit his lip ring. "about what happened last night..."
Jamie wasn't sure what she wanted him to say. She didn't know if she wanted him to say what had happened was good, or bad, or okay. She couldn't decide what she wanted with Luke.
"I was really drunk, and I think you were too," Luke continued. "and what happened...well, it probably should never have happened. I mean, I still want to be your friend, and I hope what happened between us doesn't stop that from happening," He ran a hand through his hair awkwardly. "so...friends?"
He stuck out his hand, and Jamie hesitated for a moment and then shook it. She couldn't remember a single situation in her past where she'd ever shaken anybody's hand.
"Yeah...friends." She said, taking care not to meet Luke's eyes. Needless to say, that was not the direction she had hoped that that conversation would take.
"Well...we should probably..." He gestured to the door.
"Um...yeah." Jamie forced a smile and hoped it looked convincing.
Luke pushed open the door and disappeared back into the living room. Jamie took a moment to force a smile, and then followed him. When she entered the room, there had been a small change in seating. Calum had apparently stolen Luke's seat while he had been gone, so Luke was now sitting beside Michael and the only available seat was next to Calum, which Jamie was fine with, because she had no interest in sitting beside Luke again after that awkward conversation.
She sat down and tried to keep the fake smile on her face, but eventually it melted into a sort of dejected grimace.
"Are you okay?" Calum asked Jamie, noticing her poorly hidden look of sorrow.
"Um...I don't know." Jamie sighed.
"Did Luke...do something?" he asked.
"No...well, yes, but..."
"Do you want to talk about it?"
Jamie thought for a moment. She realized she very much did want to talk about it, and, seeing as Lindsey was preoccupied sitting close enough to Ashton to be on his lap, Calum was her next closest friend in the room. Aside from Luke, of course.
"Yeah," Jamie bit her lip, which made her think of Luke. "but...not here."
Calum nodded, standing up and walking towards the same door she had just come out of, gesturing for Jamie to follow. She did, grateful that everybody was too deep into conversation to notice her leave this time.
She shut the door behind her and followed Calum up a flight of stairs and through another door into a small room. It was a bedroom, by the looks of it, with a bed in the corner and a chest of drawers next to it.
"Is this Ashton's bedroom?" She asked, sitting down next to Calum on the bed.
"No, spare room," Calum answered. "So...what happened?"
"Um...did Luke tell you about what happened with us last night?" Jamie asked. She really wasn't sure why she and Luke seemed only able to refer to their...make out session as 'what happened last night'. All they had done was kiss.
Calum hesitated for a moment before nodding.
"Well, he said he wanted to talk, and I thought maybe he was going to...ask me out or something, or...I don't know, but instead he said "I really want to be your friend," and "I hope this doesn't get in the way of our friendship," and it seemed to me like he was just going in this big rant about how he just wanted to be my friend."
Calum made an exaggerated wincing face at the word 'friend'.
"I know," Jamie sighed. "I like Luke, and I want to be more than just friends with him, if you know what I mean."
Calum nodded.
"I'm not sure why I'm even telling you this," Jamie ran a hand through her hair. "you probably don't care."
"Of course I care," Calum contradicted. "You're my friend. I mean, we just met last night, and I'm a dude, so I don't really...know how to give a chick advice, but I'm here if you just need someone to listen."
Jamie looked up at Calum. "That's probably the nicest thing a guy has ever said to me."
He rolled his eyes.
"No, I'm not kidding. All the guys I hang out with only care about getting into my pants, and none of them even seem to know that I actually have feelings, I'm not just some doll they can mess around with."
Calum gave a small smile.
"Speaking of asshole guys, I'm kind of mad at Luke," Jamie rested her back against the wall. "I mean, he led me on. He asked me out, he invited me to go that party with him, I thought maybe he liked me, and then suddenly he's all, "I hope we can be friends." What the hell?"
Calum nodded. "That's pretty shitty, but I know Luke. He probably really likes you, and after what happened, he's scared he'll mess things up by asking you out again, or trying anything. He wants to make sure you two at least stay friends."
Jamie pondered this new information. Was Calum right? He had known Luke way longer than she had, so he probably was.
When Jamie didn't say anything, Calum continued. "Like I said, I don't know if this is the best advice, but maybe you could try to make him jealous somehow. If he really likes you, he won't just let you go."
"Isn't that what he's doing, though?" Jamie sighed. "Letting me go?"
"I don't know," Calum replied. "I just know if I was in the same situation as him, and you started dating some other guy, I would probably try to get you back somehow."
"Well...It's worth a shot," Jamie suddenly had an idea. "what if...you and I 'fake' date?"
"What?" Calum furrowed his brow.
"We pretend to be going out, but we're really just faking it." Jamie explained.
"I know what you mean, but...I don't know..." Calum looked at his hands. "isn't that kind of..?"
Before he could find a word to describe what it 'kind of' was, the sound of footsteps interrupted their conversation.
"Jamie?" They heard the unmistakable voice of Lindsey call out. "Calum? Are you two up here."
The footsteps were getting closer and closer to the doorway.
"Just go with it." Jamie whispered, and before Calum could ask what he was supposed to go with, Jamie crashed her lips against his. At first his eyes widened with surprise, but when he figured out Jamie's plan, he closed his eyes and put his hand in her hair. Jamie moved her hand to his chest, where she could feel his heartbeat going a thousand miles per hour.
Jamie heard the noise of the door being thrown open, and then a gasp, and the noise of the door slamming shut and quick footsteps running back down the stairs.
Jamie and Calum pulled apart, gasping.
"That wasn't so bad, was it?" Jamie whispered when she had regained her breath.
"No," Calum, blushed a little and looked away. "But if we're going to do this, you have to be sure you want to be with Luke. Because Luke is my friend, and I'm only going to do this if I'm absolutely sure he's going to be happy in the end."
"I'm sure," Jamie promised. "but I have a condition too. If we're doing this, I want to do it the right way," she giggled a little. "I want you to fake ask me out."
"What? why?" Calum asked.
"Because, it'll be easier for me that way."
"Fine," Calum took a deep breath, and turned to me, taking my hands. "Jamie...I've fake liked you for a really long time now, and I was wondering...well...I want to know if you would like to...maybe...go on a fake date with me sometime?" He was trying not to laugh, but failing.
"Um...sure," Jamie giggled. "What kind of fake date?"
"Uh..." Calum laughed. "Do you like fake movies?"
"Yes," Jamie replied, still laughing. "are you busy on Thursday?"
"No, I'm not. Maybe we should fake exchange numbers?" Calum pulled out his phone and handed it to Jamie.
"Sure." Jamie passed him her phone.
"But you have to promise not to tell Ashton or Michael, because they could tell Luke. okay?" Jamie asked.
"Okay, I promise," Calum handed Jamie her phone back and she did the same. "but then you can't tell Lindsey."
"Why not?" Jamie asked. "She won't tell Luke."
"I don't think Ashton or Michael will either, but they could." Calum replied. And besides, that way it's fair."
"Okay, okay," Jamie laughed. "If it'll make you happy."In this chapter, I would like to thank every single person who read this book.
