Also he will cry and it might be fake.

History
Vasily Novikov was born to Nadia Novikova and Ivan Novikov in Volsk, Russia. He didn't meet his father until he was twenty and they never had much of a father-son relationship, more just an okay friendship. Like old buddies. His mother was a drunk, but never hit him. He remembers being six and doing her makeup for her when she was too drunk to and holding her hair back for her when she was sick.
She died when he was sixteen, found dead in a ditch, stabbed twice in the stomach. All for a couple hundred rubles and the little necklace Ivan had given her. It left Vasily heartbroken. He did everything he could to try and bring her back, even going as far as to learn magic. It didn't bring her back, of course. Nothing ever would, but he couldn't help but try.
That's how he found his father. As it turns out, the old fool was a practicing magician too. After the initial 'you abandoned me as an infant and drove my mother to alcoholism' conversation, they managed to develop a somewhat decent friendship. It's frosty at times, they fight, but Ivan is always there to offer Vasily advice. Unfortunately for him, Vasily became the better warlock quite some time ago.
In fact, he's one of the best. At least knowledge wise. He can tell you the origin of just about any spell or incantation, but he's always hungry for more. Nothing will ever be enough for him. He will never be good enough.
He met Carmen on a trip to Spain, funded by a book he had written on the occult. She was married at the time, but that didn't really matter to either of them. They were both desperate for love, for attention and found it in each other. She had a son, Eric, about two years old at the time. Vasily absolutely adored him, he was just a bubbly little bundle of chaos and it always made his day to see him. Soon enough, he became 'Uncle Vasya'.
Two years later and Mr. Rivera had a tragic fall. Vasily was investigated for a time, as was Carmen, but they were both cleared after it was determined that it was just a very suspicious accident. But things between them soured after that. The trust they once had was broken by the weight of their secret.
They fight often and break up even more often. Vasily always goes back to her, no matter what she says or what he does. He does it for Eric. He doesn't want the boy to grow up without a father figure like he did. Carmen may be horrible to him at times, and he will return it in kind, but they both love that kid more than anything.
She hits Vasily occasionally, always with an open hand. He knows she shouldn't, that it's wrong, but he can't leave her. Like every other time something bad happens to him, he convinces himself he deserves it.
Some days, he struggles to get out of bed, other days he can't sleep. It's like his mind has two modes, either completely stops functioning or it's running at a mile a minute and just won't stop. It's exhausting and terrifying.
