Anonymous asked: "i got tired of going through the same shit with different people." If it's still open,,, with Dream :))

~oOo~

Dream disappeared exactly a month ago.

Everyone in the Multiverse worried over the guardian. They wondered where he was, if he was alright, when he was going to come back and help them again. Ink had assured them that Dream would (hopefully) return soon. That kept their hope up. So, they waited.

Nightmare, on the other hand, did not. He liked to think he knew his brother better than anyone else, and so he had a feeling that he knew where Dream went. He wondered if he should go and find him or let him play his disappearing act a little longer. After all, the longer he's gone the more fun Nightmare has in concurring some AUs.

But the people of the Multiverse kept complaining.

And honestly?

It was kind of boring without someone trying to stop him.

That was how the king found himself back in his homeworld, a place he hadn't stepped foot in in years. It was just like how he pictured it. Ragged. Torn. Dying. A pitiful sight. And at dead center, a cut tree stood, quivering.

Nightmare only had eyes for the person standing in front of the tree, staring at it pensively. He had fallen out of touch with the other in all of their fighting and now he couldn't read his face. He supposed he didn't really need to, as the minute he got close enough, the other started talking.

"Why are you here?" Dream's voice was actually cold. It surprised Nightmare.

He tilted his head. "Why wouldn't I be here? This was my home, after all."

Dream turned and glared at him. Another surprise. The glare actually looked like it could kill someone. "Yes, your home." There was venom in his voice. This conversation was full of surprises. "A home of which you never cared for. A home you destroyed. A home you abandoned."

Nightmare sneered, his tentacles swishing in a tell of his anger. "A home that never cared for me! They abused me and you never cared to stop them. What does that say about you, oh perfect little guardian?"

"I cared!" Dream shouted, his statement echoing in the deserted land. "I cared about you more than anything. I still do, no matter what you may do. Even if you try to kill me." He looked away. "I once thought that the fact that I was your brother and that I cared...I once thought that that was all that mattered."

"It wasn't. The villagers–"

"You think I care about the villagers?" Dream laughed, and Nightmare would admit that this laugh unnerved him. It was cold. Emotionless. Dangerous. "The villagers that forced me away from my brother? The villagers that made me do everything for them, even things that they could do themselves?" He looked back at Nightmare, a false grin on his face. "Or maybe you mean the villagers that threatened to hurt my brother if I denied them company?"

Nightmare froze. This was...new information. He wanted to talk about that now, make Dream stop and talk to him, but he could tell the other wasn't done talking. He waited.

Dream was quiet for a long time. "They only cared for me because I made them feel happy." His voice was low. "That's the only reason anyone cares for me. If I didn't have my aura, then..." He trailed off, letting Nightmare make up his own conclusion to the sentence. "That's why I left."

Nightmare blinked. "What?"

"I got tired of going through the same shit with different people." Dream shook his head. "No matter where I was, where I am, the only reason people need me is that they need a pick me up. I'm like a drug that they can call their friend without being stared at."

The brothers stood there in silence for a while.

Nightmare stared at his brother. He never knew about any of that. He had never bothered to think about any of that. Dream had looked so happy that he figured...then again, the people that hurt the most can cover it up the best. He was one of them, he thought. Now, he realizes that Dream was the one hurting more between the two of them.

He opened his mouth to say something, but Dream cut him off. "If I could, I would do the same thing you did and eat one of the black apples." Nightmare's eye widened and by looking at his brother, he could tell the other meant it. His eyes looked so...tired. "Make you see that I understand. But I can't. So, unfortunately, talking will have to do the trick."

Nightmare shifted. "Dream–"

"I should probably go. You've ruined my hiding spot." Dream said, as if Nightmare wasn't there. He turned away from the tree and opened a portal. Nightmare watched him go.

He wondered if he should've made Dream stay. Made them talk about this. But that moment was up. He didn't know where he would go now. Maybe if they ever met again, he would make them talk. Maybe.

He sighed, turning to go back to his home.

He didn't tell anyone that he talked with Dream.
