Your life is a stage

1st day of 2013.

Another new day and I hoped that it would be even better than the last. It was a holiday for the campus but we decided to practice because we had a performance the following week. I went straight to the dance room and some members had already arrived earlier than me.

I warmed myself up and stretched while waiting for the rest of the members to arrive. The one I was expecting the most, of course, was Viona.

10 minutes passed and Viona arrived. All the girl members suddenly approached her and they were all very excited. They were giggling and I could overheard the thing that they were talking about.

"Look who we have here~ The happy love bird~" one of the members said.

"How's the date with Andre last night? Counting down with a date, Ohhh I'm so jealous" another asked.

"Keep it down, girls... Well, it was okay... At least the steak was delicious." Viona answered.

The room suddenly went dark, for me. I was... devastated when I heard what they were talking about. I quickly moved to the other side of the room. I couldn't look at Viona. I couldn't believe what had happened.

"Lies, lies, liar, tricked, She lied, You've been fooled BOY!!!"

I could hear those words in my head. It was painful. Really painful. My heart was crushed, just like that.

We moved on with the practice. I couldn't concentrate with the beats and tempo. That was my worst practice, worse than the first time I learned how to dance in that particular room. But I kept pressing on and it was time for lunch.

The team decided to have lunch together but I went to another diner to eat by myself. Unknowingly, Darwin followed me from behind. In the diner, he suddenly sat in front of me.

"Look who's here, eating by himself. You look like a mess, bro." Darwin said to me.

"What do you mean?" I asked.

"You know what I mean, and I know what you feel. It's about her, right?"

"So what? Nothing matters anymore."

"Hmm, you sure about that? Look, I know both you and Dre have a feeling for her. I can't blame you guys, I had the same thing the first time I saw her as well. But, after hanging out with her, just the two of us, like 2 or 3 time, I realized that she's not my type."

Upon hearing that Darwin successfully went out with her more than one time, my heart was even more devastated.

"So you've been with her, huh? Nice luck. She didn't even give me a chance."

"Wait, what? Not even once? Okay... Don't worry about that. There're still many fishes in the sea. You'll get a better one. Gotta go now, enjoy your lunch" and Darwin left the diner.

After I finished my lunch, I returned to the dance room and practiced. Viona was there and I still couldn't look at her in the eyes.

Days passed and the performance was not as anticipated. I messed up but not that bad. I couldn't control my power as I really wanted to express myself through the dance. My heart still hurt and I still couldn't accept the fact that Viona had lied to me.

Her birthday would soon arrive and I had a plan. I went to the mall and bought her a necklace. It must be weird as why should I gave her a birthday present if she had broken my heart to pieces. I wanted that to be the last. I gathered all the sketches that I had made, there were six of them. I decided to draw another one and before I put all of them together, I wrote her a letter.

Dear Viona,

First of all, I would like to say Happy Birthday. I've bought you a necklace and I hope you like it. There're also a bunch of papers inside. Those are the sketches of you that I made. I'm pretty sure you've seen most of them as I had sent them to you digitally but there's one inside which is new. You might think that I'm a creep for drawing your face all over and over again but actually I really enjoyed it since I can see your pretty smile from your pictures.

There's one thing that I would like to say to you. I don't know if you've ever heard of this before or not but people used to say that "Life is a stage". Personally, I think yours really is a stage. Your life is a beautiful stage with so many beautiful decorations and lights that shine ever so brightly. You are main actor on that stage and every time you dance, you dazzle the audiences with your graceful movements. My dream, is to be on that stage. To be able to stand next to you and see you directly instead from the audience's seats. I thought I am close, close enough to perform with you but now I realize that I am only one of the audience. I can only see you from below the stage. I've tried and I'm pretty sure you know that as well. All I ever wanted, is a chance. A chance to be accepted by you but it seemed like a very expensive thing I can never have.

It's okay now. I should be glad to be able to at least know you. To be able to have you as a friend. To have your name inside the chapters of my life. However, there's one thing that I can never do... to say directly to you that I love you. I can only say those words inside this letter since it's the only privilege that I have.

I hope that after you finish reading this letter, you will finally know how I feel about you and how I wish that we'll never become strangers. Please, at least, let me stay as your friend, for that is the only thing I can ask from you now.

Yours sincerely,

Ryan

I wrapped the present together with the letter and on the day of her birthday, I went to her house to deliver the gift. She was not around at that time so I handed it to her grandmother. She said that Viona would return in another 2 hours.

So, I waited at home for 2 hours. I waited and waited and finally my phone notification rang. She texted me and she had read the letter.

"Ryan, I'm... truly sorry. I didn't know what else to say but your request... I'll gladly accept it. We can still be friends, okay?"

That was the last time we chatted. It was still painful for me but I needed to move on.

The next day, she invited all of the dance club members to a cafe to celebrate her birthday. I went there since we'd agreed that we would still be friends.

When I saw her, she was wearing a red dress and there was something that caught my attention. The necklace she was wearing, was the one that I gave to her. She walked slowly towards me and smiled.

"Thank you for coming, Ryan"
