"Surprise!"
"Oh my God Joe!!! What are you doing here?"
"You didn't think I'd miss your Graduation did you Katherine?"
The look on her face made the hassle he had to go through to get here today so worth it. Joe knew how much Katherine would appreciate him making time for her, especially on a special day like today. She'd written him and told him how sad she was that her parents weren't going to see her graduate. And that her only family, her Aunt Shannon, wouldn't be able to get back to see it either. Her work always came first. Joe wanted her to know that someone thought she was more important than anything else in the world. So he told his manager he had to be off the day of her graduation. It took him threatening to not perform if they didn't rearrange the shows.
It took Marlene Knight stepping up for him. She made sure he'd have that day off. Joe thought that would mean Jordan would take this opportunity to surprise Katherine as well. But when Joe asked him to come with him, Jordan said no. Not for any good reason, he'd just said no.
So Joe goes alone. And shows up at her dormitory an hour before the ceremony. She hugs him tight and kisses him on the lips, just a quick, friendly peck. But the feeling of her lips on his gives him hope.
After her graduation he hangs out in her dorm room with her. Laying on her bed, they talk all night. She moves over to lay her head on his chest and he wraps his arm around her. "Thank you Joseph."
He loved the way her saying his name sounded. No one, except his family, called him Joseph.
"Why are you thanking me?"
She glanced up at him, then laid her head back on his chest. "For being here. For being my friend, for being my best friend. I hope you know how much I love you Joe. You've always been so good to me. I'll never forget that."
Hearing her say "I love you" makes his heart thump harder in his chest. He's sure she heard and felt the change in its rhythm. He hugs her a little tighter.
"I love you Katherine. I'm happy to be here for you."
Joe's memory of her telling him she loves him is one of his favorite memories. It's what has him sitting outside her dorm at Harvard today.
Joe had been hanging out at her dorm with her whenever he could sneak away. Everything was different for him when they got home from the tour. Their popularity had skyrocketed. The guys could hardly leave their homes without a mob of girls waiting outside for them. But Joe had made it work, he couldn't let anything keep him from her.
Joe knew Jordan was making excuse after excuse after excuse why he couldn't see her. He just didn't understand Jordan's thinking. How could he not want this girl? She was beautiful, smart, kind, funny...Joe thought she was absolutely perfect.
Every time he was around her, his love grew stronger and stronger for her. Whenever he went over they'd end up laying on her bed, his arms around her, watching movies. She'd always fall asleep in his arms and he'd have to slip his arm out from under her head. Being so careful not to wake her.
They had a perfect situation going on between them. It was always just the two of them. But today she talked him into taking her to the recording studio to see Jordan. She was pretty insistent about it. She was tired of Jordan avoiding her and wanted to confront him about it. Joe could never tell her no. So he took her and now he's sitting outside her dorm.
She'd ran out of the studio when she saw Jordan with that skeazy girl. Joe knew it had hurt her when she saw Jordan kiss her. Jordan yelled at Joe for bringing Katherine with him and then he chased after her.
Joe looks for Jordan's car, it's not parked outside her dorm. So either Katherine's here alone or still out somewhere with Jordan.
Joe finally gets out of his jeep and heads into the dorm. When he knocks on her door she answers right away. She's yelling at him, well she's yelling at Jordan as soon as the door opens.
"Oh hey Joe, sorry I'm just so pissed right now. And I'm really sorry for running off like I did."
Joe kind of figured she'd be pissed when he agreed to take her to the studio to see Jordan.
Jordan had brought some new girl to the studio with him the last three days. It was some skeazy girl he'd just recently met and Joe thought it was time Katherine knew what was keeping Jordan from seeing her since he got home. Joe was sick of being the nice guy and tiptoing around Katherine's feelings. She deserved to see Jordan for who he really was. Or at least for who he was choosing to be.
Joe feels bad about throwing Jordan under the bus. He tries to make it better by explaining that Jordan just met the girl, but that actually makes it worse.
Katherine sits down on her bed and thanks Joe for trying to make her feel better and for always being there for her. When Joe sits down next to her he takes her hand, and he finally confesses how he feels about her.
"Katherine I'll always be here for you. I love you. I've always loved you and I always will."
Then she looks up at him and smiles. The next thing he knows, they're kissing. Really kissing. Just like he always dreamed they would. It's the most phenomenal feeling he's ever felt.
When he feels her hands slide under his shirt and begin to run over his muscles, he feels a rush of excitement all over his body.
Things are moving forward quickly between them and Joe isn't sure it's okay. He's not sure he's ready to take this step. He's almost positive she's still a virgin and he's knows without a doubt that he is. Will she think less of him if he tells her he's a virgin and not sure he's ready for sex? What if they do have sex and he disappoints her? What if he's not good at it? What if she's only doing this with him now because Jordan wouldn't? Is he just a cheap replacement for who she really wanted?
When she takes her shirt off, all those thoughts disappear.
