Joe works tirelessly on his album. He's fueled by regrets and a broken heart. Everything he sings brings him back to Kate. He misses her. And thinking about her with Jordan hurts, it physically hurts, because he loves Jordan like a brother but he hates him for going after his Kate. He's so conflicted.
So to keep from thinking about them together, kissing, touching, fucking, planning a fucking wedding, Joe works his ass off.
Donnie and Danny are huge helps. Except when they bring up running into Jon and Jon filling them in on Jordan and Kate.
"Jon said Jordan's been ready to get married since like last year. She's picked like four wedding dates, but keeps changing it. Jordan's tired of waiting, he's working on his solo album too and his manager says he'll tour once it's done. Jordan told Jon he doesn't want to be single when he goes on tour." Donnie tells Joe and Danny.
Joe laughs, not a funny ha ha kind of laugh, but more a hateful, can't believe what he just heard kind of laugh. "Does Jordan not realize engaged doesn't equal single? So what's the deal, is Kate having second thoughts?"
Donnie doesn't even think before he answers, "No, not at all. Hell she's been in love with Jordan for forever. She just wants to concentrate on finishing school right now." Donnie realizes what he just said and he looks over at Joe. "Oh shit Joey, I'm sorry I didn't mean.."
Joe stops him. "It's cool Cheese, don't sweat it. Let's just get back to work. I think the chorus needs something else. It feels like it's missing something." Joe goes over what's turning into his favorite song of the album so far, Stay the Same. He loves everything about it just about, but he can't help but feel like it needs a little more to it.
Then it hits him, "I got it! It needs a gospel choir, singing in it, here at the chorus."
They work on this idea a little longer and Joe has to excuse himself. "I'll be right back guys." Joe goes into the restroom and takes a deep breath. Hell she's been in love with Jordan for forever. Was Donnie right about this? Had Kate been in love with Jordan the whole time they'd been together? Was he just a place holder until Jordan was finally ready to be with her? Conveniently after the New Kids broke up and he wasn't fucking around with girls on the road? And Joe can't help but wonder why Jordan thinks he's still single just because they aren't married. Joe hits the wall of the bathroom stall. He hates this feeling. Why can't he just get over her?
"Hey guys, let's go get a drink. We've done a lot of good work here today. I think we've earned a strong drink."
Danny looks at his watch. "Damn Joe it's getting late. I've got to get home, help with Danny Jr. Rain check? And I'll look into finding a gospel choir who will record the song with you. Goodnight guys."
"Kim's going to kill me, but yeah let's go get a couple of drinks. But then I've got to get home. Xavier likes it when I put him to bed. We've got this little song we sing...but I think we deserve a little celebration after today."
Donnie and Joe head to a little local bar that's just down the street from Joe's apartment, he sold the big house about a year after Katherine moved out, he couldn't stand being there without her. Joe orders him and Donnie each a Scotch and they sit in a booth. "Donnie I'm really excited about this song. I think it'll be my first single. I'm also thinking about it being the title of the album."
Donnie nods, "Yeah I think that sounds like a good plan. Joe, I want to apologize again for what I said about Katherine and Jordan. I saw your face and you know I didn't mean it like it came out. You know Katherine was in love with you. You two had an amazing relationship. I was always so jealous of you and what you had with her. You know I always wanted to find that one special girl and settle down. I always wanted to fall in love and have a family. Now I have and I still don't think Kim and I have what you and Katherine had. So don't think I meant she was always in love with Jordan, she was before you. And now after you. But I never got that feeling when you two were together."
"Thanks Donnie. What we had was amazing. She's a special woman. And damnit Cheese, I miss her everyday. I can't stop thinking about her. I just want to fall out of love with her. I want to meet someone else, fall in love with someone else. I'm just so fucking ready to move on. I just can't seem to do it." Joe finishes his drink and as if she was keeping an eye on Joe a waitress brings him another drink. "Thanks sweetheart."
Donnie watches how the good looking waitress watches Joe as she walks away. Joe barely notices her. "All I can think about is her and Jordan getting married. But then you tell me today that Kate doesn't want to set a wedding date. Maybe that means she doesn't really want to marry him. Maybe..."
"Stop Joe, don't even go there. There's no maybe there. Look you asked her to marry you a dozen freaking times. She turned you down every time. Man she's not your meant to be, she's Jordan's. You've got to move on. I love you bro, but I'm going to give you some brutal honesty here. It's never going to happen for you and Katherine. What you two had was real and it was special and amazing, but it's over. Move the fuck on. I love you and I hate seeing you like this. It's like you don't even notice other women, beautiful women looking at you. That hot ass waitress has been eye fucking you since we walked in."
Joe looks up and catches the waitress looking over at him. She smiles then looks away.
"Joe you really need to take her back to your apartment and fuck the shit out of her. When was the last time you forgot everything else and just got lost in a beautiful woman?"
Joe thinks about it and he's a little embarrassed. "It's been about six, no eight months, I guess. But that doesn't help me any. I see Kate's face in every girl I've been with since she and I ended. Or I end up comparing the girl to Kate and they never live up to her."
Joe downs his drink. And just like before, the beautiful waitress brings him another drink. This time Donnie stops her.
"What's your name sweetheart?"
"Ally."
"Hi Ally, I'm Donnie. This here is my devilishly handsome friend Joe. Say hi Joe."
Joe blushes a little, "Hi Ally. It's nice to meet you."
Ally smiles at him and her whole face lights up. "Nice to meet you too Joe."
"Tell me something Ally. What do you think of my friend Joe here?"
Ally blushes now. She stares down at Joe for a few seconds. "Honestly, I think he's gorgeous. He's got the most beautiful blue eyes and smile I've ever seen." She can't help but smile as she covers her face.
Donnie watches Joe getting embarrassed. "So Ally are you single?"
"Yes. Very."
Donnie hits Joe across the table. "Hear that Joey Joe, the beautiful Miss Ally here is very single." Joe shakes his head, he can't believe Donnie is doing this to him right now. It makes him a little self conscious. Joe downs his drink, again.
Ally takes his glass and brings him back another one, "I made this one a double. I'm off in twenty minutes by the way."
