Katherine stood by her word, after that week, they were never together in that way again. They talked from time to time, but they didn't see each other again until 1994, when she heard New Kids had broken up. That visit ended up testing her resolve and her resolve almost lost.

Katherine flew to Boston to check on Joe when she heard the news. She was worried about him.

When Joe answered his door and saw her, his beautiful Kate standing there, all felt right in his world again. But she wasn't there for anything other than to make sure he was okay. She hadn't changed her mind.

"Kate, I can move to California now. I've got nothing keeping me in Boston. If I'd known this was going to be how it ended I'd never have given up being with you to be with them."

"Joseph, I'm sorry but I just don't feel that way anymore. I love you and I care about how you're doing. But we can't go back to how it was. I'm afraid our time has past. But that doesn't mean we can't still be apart of each others lives. We've got such an amazing history Joe. Have you even tried dating anyone else?"

Joe walks towards Katherine. She moves back until her back is against the wall. Both is hands land on the wall on either side of her head. His lips graze her cheek, "Date? No I haven't tried dating anyone else." Joe pushes the hair off her face and puts it behind her ear. His lips brush against her ear as he whispers to her again. "I have tried fucking, I don't know a few dozen, women. But every time I'm inside a woman there's only one face I see. And no matter how hard, and I do mean that literally, I try to fuck that face out of my head, it's always all I can see."

Joe pushes his hips against her, she can feel his erection digging into her core. And God help her she wants him. "Joe we can't do this." But she doesn't sound very convincing as a moan escapes her lips. Joe's mouth crashes down onto hers and she accepts it hungrily.

Katherine talks real big about Joe moving on, but she hasn't so much as kissed another man since Joe. And she's been missing the touch of a man, not just any man, this man. But no matter what, it's going to end the same way. And that thought pulls her out of the trance Joe's kiss has her in.

"Joe, stop, we can't." She pushes him away and puts some distance between them. "I want to be here for you as your friend. But only as your friend. I know New Kids breaking up has to be hard for you. But Joe you're so fucking talented, you can do this by yourself. You don't need anyone else. You need to find yourself. And I can't help you with that, I'm too big a part of the past. I love you Joseph, but I've got to go. I hope we'll see each other again someday. Goodbye." It breaks her heart to finally admit it's over between she and Joe, but she knows there's no going back for them.

Joe doesn't see or hear from Katherine for two years.

Joe runs into Marlene and Jon at the grocery store the day before Thanksgiving in 1996. After they catch up some Marlene invites Joe over for Thanksgiving dinner. "I know your family always does lunch, and Donnie and Danny are coming, so it wouldn't be complete without you too. It'll be good to have all of you together again. Plus Jordan's bringing Katherine with him, so it'll be like old times."

Jon sees the change in Joe's face at the mention of Katherine. "Will you be okay seeing Katherine?"

Joe smiles at Jon, "Yeah man it's been two years since we ended things for good. You said Jordan's bringing Kate? Are they, together now or something?"

"You don't know? They've been together about a year now."

Joe hides the pain he's feeling now. "Hadn't heard, but good for them. I'm happy for them both. It'll be good to see them. What time you want me there Marlene?"

Joe's not sure how he feels as he gets ready the next day. He's excited about seeing her and terrified at the same time. His beautiful Kate is with Jordan now, so everything is different. But he still can't wait to see her again. Everything in the world just makes more sense when she's around.

Joe gets to Marlene's before Jordan and Katherine. He's glad, it gives him a chance to calm his nerves a little bit.

When she does finally arrive he can't help but notice how happy she looks. And how good her and Jordan look together. They're a very impressive couple. Katherine's step quickens when she sees Joe. "Oh my God Joseph, you're here too? This brings back some memories, all of us in the same house again." When they hug, it feels so comfortable, so natural. "How have you been?"

He let's her go and takes a step back to look at her. She's changed a lot in the last two years. "I've been good. I made a movie. And I've been shopping around a solo album. How's school?"

"Schools good. I finished my Masters, now I'm working on getting my PhD. I'm working as an Associate Professor at UC San Diego. I've got about two more years and I'll be a doctor."

Joe loves it. She's living her dream. "That's awesome Kate, I'm so proud of you. And you and Jordan? How's that going? I honestly just heard you two were together yesterday. I'm happy for you Kate."

She's relieved he's not upset. "Thanks Joe. Can we talk for a minute? Maybe outside? I wanted to tell you something in private."

"Yeah let's go."

Just as they are about to go outside Marlene calls for everyone to come to dinner. Joe smiles at Katherine. "Rain check?" Katherine nods and goes over to sit next to Jordan.
