Mary Delton was a 10-year-old girl who lived in a town with her aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Hedero, in Peru. Mrs. Hedero was a plump and gleeful lady with brown eyes and profuse hair. She loved to change her hair colour every now and again. She also loved to wear dresses, especially the ones that were pink. She also had a passion of painting. On the other hand, Mr Hedero was quite the opposite. He had sleek, dark black hair and bloodshot eyes (due to his habit of working till the stroke of midnight.) He did not have any specific hobby or passion but, he did like travelling, even though he did not have any time for it.

Mary didn't always live with them. Before, she used to live in UK, Scotland with her mom, Linda Delton, and her dad, Augustin Delton. Mary's parents had died due to the outbreak of the Spanish flu when she was about 6 years old. A very 'unfortunate event' as the Hederos called it.

The Hederos always wanted a child ; a daughter, to be precise. They prayed to god from dawn to dusk, however they never were to be pitied. So, they thought that the death of the Deltons was an opportunity for them to finally get the greatest treasure of their life.

Mary did not like being sent to Peru and being forced to live with her uncle and aunt. They were very rich people though, and gave her whatever she wanted to make her happy, yet she stayed cross all the time.

In Scotland, Mary was a sweet and delightful child with lovely blue eyes, rosy cheeks, light brown hair, and lips as red as a cherry. People simply adored her. But when her parents died, her face became pale, her bright blue eyes were no longer bright and they developed dark circles around them. She was no longer the girl who everyone adored.

One day, Mrs Hedero found Mary sulking in a corner, and wanted to speak to her. She did not like speaking to Mary because she often screamed at anyone who would try and talk to her.

"Mary dear," she said with a lot of affection. "We have decided to take you to Brazil for a holiday as your summer vacation has started, and if you want to take some amigos along with you, don't hesitate to ask us. Ok?"

"Yeah, sure" Mary answered dully.

The next day, she was asked to pack her luggage, and just sometime later, they set out for the airport. During their flight, Mary was getting quite bored because she had no one to talk to and nothing to play with as all the toys that she had brought were in her luggage. So, she started to annoy everybody on the flight with her strident crying. Till the time the flight landed, Mary had stopped crying and shrieking as she had fallen asleep.

When she woke up, she was lying on a canopy bed. Why am I not in the flight anymore? She wondered. Since Mary was living with her aunt and uncle for so long, she had learned to speak Spanish (only a little) so she said "What are we doing Aquí tía?"

"So, you know bit of Español. You're a quick learner. Anyway, this is your hotel room and mine is just next to yours." Mrs Hedero walked out of the room leaving Mary alone.

She took out her dolls and started to play with them just when she noticed a forest.
