A pirate's life

[Silver's POV]

I was playing a tune sitting on a barrel nearby, singing occasionally. The salty ocean air wisping through my short hair and the humidity of the hot afternoon causing my excuse for clothing to stick to my tanned skin. If I had fur I could just assume I'd be swearing like the pirate I was.

I squeezed the squeeze-box in my hand and closed my eyes, taking in the familiar scent of the sea and hearing the wind flapping at the sails, seagulls flying past the mast and landing nearby.

"Get yur butts back to work! And stop that wretched singing, Silver!" I heard the Captain's voice ring through and my music faltered and I stood to attention.
"Ay! Captain Catra." I hid my squeeze-box and scurried to climb up the shrouds. Sailors, moving around hurriedly and with haste.
"Hold up, sailor!" The captain called and I froze, tensing up. Did I do something wrong?

"Yes, Captain?" I descended and respectfully took my place.

"I didn't steal expensive instruments for you to make my ears bleed with 'em. So I suggest you stop playing them."

"Pardon my intrusion but I--"

"No excuses, Sailor." My attention strangely drifted to the dagger on her side. The name Adora engraved onto it. If I had ears, I could only picture the tilt it would suddenly have at this. Who's Adora?

"Do you understand, Silver?" Catra stood taller, looking down at me, the gold earrings on her ears gleaming in the sunlight. Several beads decorated her dark brown locks, weaving them beautifully around her face and accentuating her eyes. Her outfit fitting snug around her frame. And her glare changing to utter confusion at my suspense.

"Uh, Ay, Captain. I understand." I saluted and she gave a curt nod.
I was just about to head off to do my duties when she stopped me, a hint of something I couldn't place in her voice.

"But...you can keep singing. It's nice." My eyes widened and I turned to face her fully. She avoided my gaze and cleared her throat.
"Tell anyone that I said that, and I'll feed you to the sharks meself. Ya hear?" I gave a firm nod and shrank into myself. She has actually done that to the last prisoner we had on board. Gruesome stuff honestly.

"Good." She fixed her belt and shooed me away, going to yell at SeaHawk for something he tied wrong. I made my way up the shrouds to the main mast, hooking my telescope on my belt tightly.

Making my way into the Crow's nest I pulled out the telescope and searched the horizon. My mind straying back to the name on the Captain's belt. She never spoke of anyone with that name. Possibly a rival and it was a souvenir of some sort.

I shook the thought away and scoped out the waters.

That's when I almost dropped my telescope. I could've sworn I saw someone near the hull of the ship. But when I looked again I saw no one. I rubbed my eyes and sighed. I'm just tired is all. Making my way down the shrouds and just idly lazing around the quarterdeck, I heard a splash in what was actually calm waters at this time of day. I looked over the side of the ship and saw a figure deep in the water; unable to actually make it out.

"Did you just see that?" I voiced my thoughts and Scorpia appeared out of no where.
"Yeah, the salty ocean air. Watery abyss at the slightest mishap. This is the life." She was new here. "You know they say Mermaids live here." She gestured at the vast ocean and I hummed.

"Mermaids? Those things aren't real Scorpia." I folded my arms, leaning on the side.

"Uh-uh. They so are. Not many sailors have seen them but I can assure you they are."

"Pfft, we're more likely to see the navy than a mermaid out here." I chuckled dryly and she pouted.

"I heard a story about a pirate and a mermaid who were friends once." Scorpia leaned with me, looking to the blue ocean, the wind rippling through the water.
"Oh yeah? And what happened? Did they fall in love or something?" I scoffed and chuckled.
"They did actually. But the Captain's lover suddenly disappeared, and they didn't really have a reason to remember her anymore. Forced themselves to forget the mermaid and continued with their life, looting and hating music. For the mermaid used to sing all the time to the captain, soothing them. It was just a painful reminder."
