EDITED
Alyssa's POV
I huff and grab Tori's arm shakily. It's been so long since I have been to school and I am extremely nervous. I have to explain to the principal that I was kidnapped and unable to attend school, so I won't get held back for missing too many days. Of course I will have to catch up on a lot, but I am willing to do it if it means I don't have to spend another year in high school.
"I'll be okay," Tori soothes in my ear, making me kind of relax a bit, but not too much. I look eyes wide to the front doors before we walk in. Inside, everybody states at me, and by 'everybody', I mean every single student and teacher. We're a bit later than we usually are, first period just about to start, and Tori leads me to the office to talk to the secretary.
"Alyssa? Alyssa Davison?!" She screeches when she sees me. "I can't believe you are back. Where have you been?" I sure wasn't expecting that.
"That's what I need to talk to the principal about," I reply with a shaky smile that doesn't last for long.
"I will check to see if he is available. Just hold on a sec." The old secretary, Mrs. Dublin, gets out of an equally old spinning chair to go in the back towards Mr. Wayne's office. She comes back within seconds, telling us we can go back there.
"Thanks for doing this with me, Tori," I whisper to her and she smiles.
"You're my best friend, of course I would do this for you." We walk into Mr. Wayne's office and there he is, sitting back in his leather seat, wearing his usual suit and tie, his blazer hung up on the coatrack in the corner of his office.
"Alyssa," he says, "so great to see you again. I was so worried that something bad happened."
"Yes, I know, sir," I reply as me and Tori sit in the two seats opposite of him.
"And who is this?" The 30-something-year-old principal asks as he gestures to Tori.
"I'm Tori, her best friend," she answers for herself and Mr. Wayne nods before crossing his arms over his chest.
"Nice for you to support your friend. So, what's been up Alyssa?"
I take a deep breath before explaining everything fast but as slow as I can. "I was kidnapped quite a while ago and escaped and kidnapped again by him and was just recently let go for good."
"Hold on, hold on. You were really kidnapped?" He asks me with a raised eyebrow.
"Yes," I answer with a curt nod of my head. "He let me go and fled someplace. I haven't seen him again. That's why I have been missing and unable to attend school."
"You have missed a lot of days of school, Davison," he comments.
"I know," I reply, "and I want to be able to have the chance to make up all the work I have missed out on so I won't have to be retained."
"That seems fair," he says before nosing his head. "Okay. I will have all your teachers send me all the work you need to make up and you can come by at the end of the day to pick it all up. I will give you three weeks to get it all finished and turned in. The end of the year is coming soon anyways."
"Thank you, sir," I say and me and Tori leave his office and go to our lockers just as the bell rings for first period. We get everything we need and walk to first period together.
School was horrible because I was just being stares at and everybody wished to know where I was. I have them no answer, just shrugging my shoulders to get them to leave me alone. It didn't work, as I was still asked multiple questions. It was all exhausting in the simplest form of explaining how it all was.
"I'll see you later," I tell Chase Holton, the one who's party I was supposed to show up a while ago when Matt captured me again.
"Still coming over this Friday for the party?" He questions before we are too far out of ear-shot.
"Definitely," I tell him with a smile and turn around to meet with Tori at the front entrance.
Chase is the only person that hasn't asked me about my disappearance an all of that, and I thank God for that. I am coming to the party Friday, wanting to let loose for a while.
"Hey," Tori greets me and I greet her the same back.
"So Chase's party?" She asks, wiggling her eyebrows, making me roll my eyes. "You're actually going?"
"Yeah," I tell her. "That is if you are going.."
"Oh, of course I'm going," she says and I laugh a little.
"Good, I wouldn't want to be alone."
"Well you wouldn't be alone with Chase there."
"Shut up," I say just before laughing again. "Would you mind taking me somewhere?"
"Where?" She asks me.
"It's a surprise for you," I tell her as we get inside her car."
"Okay. Now?"
"Now," I confirm with a nod.
"Um. Okay." I take our my phone and turn on Google Maps, typing in the address to Johnson records, since I still don't really know the way by memory.
"So have you talked to your mother lately?" She asks as we leave the school's parking lot.
"Nah," I tell her, looking out the window at all the buildings. "She's texted me a few times but I really can't talk to her. It's just that, why wouldn't she tell me that my father died in war? She can't keep something like that from me; it's a terrible thing to do."
"Yeah," agrees Tori. "But maybe she had a reason?"
"There is no good enough reason to keep something like that from your child. They deserve to know no matter how bad it may seem to tell them."
"True," replies Tori just before we hit the highway. "I hope this is a good surprise."
"Oh, it is," I reply with a small smirk playing on my lips. Tori is going to freak out.
