Sophie slumped on her bed, homework forgotten. Every day without her best friend it was harder and harder. Keefe was the one to crack the jokes and was a bit like Sophie's comic relief. Without him, she didn't know what to do.

The Neverseen had been quiet since their last attack, and something was definitely up. She prayed it wasn't something to do with Keefe.

Biana had tried to hail her fifteen times now, and she finally decided to stop ignoring her and answer. Sophie rubbed her eyes, dark circles wallowing beneath them. She pulled on a hoodie and strode down the the leapmaster shouting "Everglen!" and disappeared into the light.

Grady and Edaline shared a glance. Sophie had been really depressed ever since "it" happened. No matter how many times they tried to lighten the mood, she would feign tiredness and sit alone in her room for the rest of the night.

Grady was confused why Sophie was acting like this over a BOY. Shouldn't girls her age be more worried about their grades? Sometimes he still got mad at That Boy, even if he WAS in a coma.

Edaline watched her husband's frown deepen, and she placed a gentle hand on his shoulder. It will be OK, she seemed to be saying. Grady's shoulders released the tiniest bit of tension at her touch.

Biana bounced over the gate to welcome Sophie, who was doing a rather convincing job of a smile.

"Hi!" Biana bubbled. "I'm so glad you're here! We haven't hung out in what, forever!" The excited brunette failed to notice her friend's façade fall for a second and dragged Sophie inside.

"I noticed you were a bit sad lately, so I thought we could make some mallowmelt together!" Biana frowned at her friend's lack of reaction. "Um, Sophie...?"

"Uh huh, yeah, great!" Sophie said with as much enthusiasm as she could muster. Biana paused and raised her finger to her lips, thinking.

"Oh! We could bring some to Keefe!"

Sophie's eyes lit up slightly at his name, and continued to let Biana pull her down the long hall towards the kitchen.

Several frosting battles, pillow fights and soggy mallowmelts later, Sophie was surprised to see she was actually having fun. The two giggling girls light leaped over to the healing center to see Keefe.

"Elwin!" Biana cried, "we've got mallowm-"

Biana's face dropped and her plate of mallowmelt dropped. Sophie heard the noise and came rushing in.

"Biana, what's wrong?"

The shocked girl pointed a trembling finger over at Keefe's cot.

He was gone.
