The avengers campus was slightly more active than usual, partly due to a conference requested by Nick Fury and the arrival of the Wakandan King and princess.
The designated conference room quickly filled with the aforementioned Wakandan King T'Challa, Sam Wilson, Bucky Barnes, Pepper Potts, James Rhodes, Clint Barton, Bruce Banner and Nick Fury. Each hero took a seat at the long rectangular table while Nick Fury stood in the front with a large holographic screen behind him.
"You all know why I called this meeting but in case anyone's forgot we're all here to discuss the logistics of Project Next-Gen. Ms Potts has already nominated Mr Parker and Ms Maximoff, King T'challa has nominates his sister and Monica Rambeau of S.W.O.R.D. contacted me a few hours ago about a potential candidate they found for the project,"
"You know, about the next-gen thing. Are we sure we wanna do this? I mean, the fight's over and the world seems pretty calm right now. Isn't that the reason we decided we Avengers should, for the most part, go our separate ways?" Bucky said, leaning forwards in his chair with his arms resting on the table.
"Unfortunately the fight's never truly over, as a soldier I thought you would have known that. And besides, this is Stark's death wish. The least we can do to repay his sacrifice is to honour it," Fury replied.
"I'm with Bucky on this one. The world's calm and Vision once said that the presence of heroes makes people want to challenge them. By putting together a new team, we might be causing a problem instead of a solution," Rhodey explained.
"I agree, I think we should at least consider putting more thought in, and we're not even sure the kids would agree with it," Pepper added.
"I see. Although I hate feeling under prepared, the ultimate goal is for the people to feel safe. If that's already the case then so be it. Anyone else think we should postpone this project until necessary?" Fury said and everyone raised their arms.
"However, we still need to test them, even if we postpone the project we've got to see if it's actually gonna take," Clint suggested restarting the discussion.
"I agree, we should send them on an assignment. Something small, just to see if they are ready," T'Challa replied.
"I guess that's possible, My S.W.O.D. contact spoke of an illegal weapons operation she was going to assign a team to handle in a few months. I'll ask her if she can reassign the mission to us, and hopefully, she'll bring her asset with her,"
"That can work," Bucky replied. "But someone's gonna have to go with them, like a supervisor,"
"I'll do it, it's been quiet lately, and I need an excuse to pick up the shield," Sam announced to the room.
"Does anyone else want to volunteer?" Fury asked, and the room remained silent.
"Alright then, we'll call another meeting in a few weeks, to further discuss this, and then hopefully, we'll call a meeting with the kids and break the news. You're all dismissed." Furry said, wrapping up the meeting.
The room slowly emptied leaving only Sam in his seat. He held his chin as he realised just how much the world had changed. True peace was not something he thought he'd ever see but the past few months had proved him wrong. Other than a few incidents it seemed that the blip had brought humanity closer together.
Sam's train of thought was interrupted by something. The sound of metal knocking against the door to the conference room.
"I hear this place has a bar," He said, leaning against the door frame.
"You wanna buy me a drink?" Sam said with a mix of joy and surprise
"Well, I don't think we need to pay for it but it's the thought that counts,"
"You're stupid man," Sam said with a chuckle, standing up from his seat and joining Bucky outside the room.
