Try as you might, you were incapable of forgetting the dead blackness of that white mask's eyes imprinted on your mind as you and Lynda strolled down the front steps of the school with your arms linked, turning up the street.

"It's totally insane!" Lynda exclaimed in bewilderment. "We have three new cheers to learn in the morning, the game in the afternoon, I get my hair done at five and the dance is at eight. I'll be totally wiped out!"

You shrugged. "I think you have too much to do tomorrow. I don't."

"It's your own fault and I don't feel sorry for you," she grinned and looked at you, her smile bright and cruel.

"(Y/N)! Lynda!" Another body joined the conversation as Annie barged out of one of the side doors to the building, jogging up to the both of you. "Why didn't you both wait for me?"

"We did," Lynda gave a sigh through her teeth. "Fifteen mins. You totally never showed up."

Annie pursed her lips. "That's not true! Here I am."

Sensing the shift in her emotions, you regarded her from the corner of your eye. "What's wrong, Annie? You're not smiling."

"I'm never smiling again," she cursed under her breath. "Paul dragged me into the boy's locker room to tell me-"

"Let me guess, exploring uncharted territory?" Lynda waggled her puckered eyebrows.

Laughter bubbled in your throat at the remark. "It's been so totally charted."

This was basically what your friendship with them consisted off. Bantering and sexual remarks all around, bonus points if you could get on each other's nerves.

But all in all, Annie and Lynda were your two closest friends by a landslide, and you wouldn't miss them for the world.

"We just talked," the brunette insisted, her whole face softening when she talked about him. "Old jerko got caught throwing eggs and soaping windows. His parents grounded him for the weekend. He can't come over tonight."

"Weren't you babysitting tonight?" You asked.

"The only reason she babysits is to have a place to..." The rest of Lynda's sentence was lost on you as you glanced down the street, seeing a station wagon slowly moving up towards the three of you.

In that moment the wind picked up, cutting and cold so you shucked up the collar of your coat.

"Isn't that Davon Graham? He's cute."

"Don't think so... I..." You glimpsed at the vehicle that rolled by, directly peering into the the window where a strange, pale face gazed straight back at you until it whizzed past.

There was a heaviness forming in your throat, an uneasiness that made you want to go straight home.

"Hey!" Annie yelled, unfazed. "Speed kills!"

The vehicle stopped and sat there for a second until it rounded the corner and out of sight.

"Annie," you shot her down with a look that clearly showed disapproval as you unlinked your arm from Lynda's to rub at your mouth in frustration. "Some day you're gonna get all of us in deep fucking trouble!"

"I hate a guy with a car and no sense of humour."

Lynda shook her head. "Well, are we still on for tonight?"

The plan had been to have a sleepover after babysitting at Lynda's house, watching movies and talking about boys probably.

The latter always ended up in you having nothing to contribute because so far, you've been very cold-shouldered towards the opposite sex.
