You know those stories people tell their children to keep them off the streets at night? A supposed boogeyman lurking in the shadows, waiting for his next prey?
You didn't believe in that nonsense. The only evil in your life right now was school.
"(Y/N)! Are ya ready yet? I'm fucking waiting! God, you're as slow as a dead snail."
You were busy examining yourself in the mirror of your room when the sound of your best friend's shrill voice penetrated your mind, accompanied by vigorous knocking on the door.
Your head turned and your eyes caught the clock on the wall that read it was 7:54 AM.
Rolling your eyes, you yelled back from the other side of the door, playfully rising up to her attitude. "It's just school, Annie! Sheesh. Be there in a min."
Annie was usually a pretty soft spoken girl... Just not when it came to anything school related. You'd grown very much used to her scoldings in the decade of your close friendship with her, and knew her like the back of your hand.
Carrying on with what you were currently occupying yourself with, you allowed yourself one final check in the mirror. Your outfit of the day consisted of the usual black, ripped stretch jeans, long-sleeved top with a coat and a set of sneakers.
After running a comb through your hair, you hurriedly threw your (H/L), (H/C) locks into the style you always went with and bam, you were ready to go, sauntering over to your desk where you had prepared your backpack last night.
"Hey, it's not because you don't care about school that I don't. Some of us actually wanna pass."
The long and exasperated sigh Annie released made a faint, amused smirk tug up at one corner of your mouth as you closed your eyes, willing down the slew of insults you wanted to throw back at her.
She sure hit the nail with that one, though. You're 18, so one year older than the rest of your friends, but you still shared the same classes because you failed last year.
You pulled the door to your bedroom open, gazing amusedly at your brown haired friend who was tapping her foot on the floor impatiently with her arms folded over her chest.
Annie had a soft, innocent quality to her face, her eyes bright and alive with a small flicker of rebellion in them that matched her chestnut, short-cut hair really well.
You crossed your arms and mirrored her look with a rather unfeminine snort at her emotionless expression. "I know, I know. Stop trying to murder me with your eyes, An. I have to drop off the key at the Myers house first or my dad is gonna be pissed."
Both of you left the house shortly after, down the front walk to the street. You had your bag slung over your shoulder while Annie carried her stack of book in her hands, lapsed into comfortable silence as you listened to the trees rustling.
Across one of the backyards, you spotted a small, eight year old boy with tousled brown hair and pale blue eyes running towards you with his own books, looking eager as always.
You smiled down at him, ruffling his hair some more. "Heya, Tommy."
A reciprocal grin slipped onto his face. "Hi, (Y/N)! Are you coming over tonight? Are you?"
You nodded. "Same time, same place."
You could literally see the happiness spark inside the boy's heart at your answer. "Can we make jack-o'-lanterns?"
