"What do you mean he's not dead?? A mountie came up and told me he was dead!!" Elizabeth exclaimed, a little confused. "You were right there!!"

"Look, Elizabeth... Well... Jack didn't die."

"He didn't?"

"Yes... The mounties have confirmed it. They did not find his body."

"No...you're lying..."

"I'm not, listen to me, Elizabeth. He's alive."

"No! This is all a lie! I'm in a coma or something--"

"Elizabeth! You MUST believe me! Jack is alive! He's a prisoner!" Elizabeth instantly got to her feet, eyes wide.

"What are you talking about?"

"Jack... is a hostage..."

"A hostage? This is even worse --"

"At least he's alive... you're not a widow..." Elizabeth felt so confused, and worried. First her husband was dead...and now he was alive??

Jameson Hughes smiled crazily at the three Mounties who were bound together.

"Look, why don't you just let us go? The Mountie Headquarters will probably give you a better sentence." Jack said.

"No way, we're not doing that, at all." Hughes replied, smiling still. "I know you tried to capture us awhile back... this is our revenge."

"YOU'RE INSANE!" Nathaniel shouted beside Jack who groaned. Hughes turned to him and punched him in the face, Jack bolted forward, trying to stop him from hurting the ensign.

"The squirt needs to be taught a lesson!" Hughes said to his partner in crime. Jack felt his heartbeat pick up, realizing that Nathaniel was probably going to be beaten. These criminals were known for that.

"No!" Jack protested as Hughes' partner began to untie Nathaniel.

"Shut up!" Hughes growled. Jack closed his mouth and watched Nathaniel be pulled to his feet while struggling against him.

"Please don't hurt him! Please please!"

"Why not?"

"You can't just kill him!"

"I'm not going to," Hughes' partner replied, still holding Nathaniel's arm.

"Take me instead!"

"What?" Hughes asked, surprised. Nathaniel's eyes widened with shock.

"Sir, no you can't do that!"

"Quiet, Ensign!" Jack lowered his voice till it was a mere whisper. "Take me instead, Hughes. Punch me...hit me in the face.. After all I was the first one to go after you."

Hughes ran his hand through his hair thinking about it. "You're right."

"Hold it right there, Hughes," A familiar voice said behind him.

"BILL! Look out!" Jack yelled, warning his friend who nearly was punched by Hughes' partner in crime.

Soon Bill had knocked out both bad guys. He smiled and bent down to help untie Jack who was eternally grateful to be alive.

"So... how's Elizabeth and Hope Valley?"

"Um, everyone thought you were dead."

"Dead?" Jack blinked a few times.

"What are you talking about?"

"You know.. the falling rocks?"

"Oh! But I got out of the way in time." Bill nodded silently as Jack rubbed his wrists to get the circulation back in him.

"We better go home soon..."

Several days later...

"He's not dead, he's not dead," Elizabeth kept saying to herself, as she touched her stomach gently. Abigail gave her a small smile.

"Bill wired and said that he was bringing Jack home."

"That's good," Elizabeth replied quietly.

"Are you excited to tell Jack you're pregnant?" The young schoolteacher nodded her head, looking off to the distance. "Elizabeth? Are you all right?"

"I thought he was dead..."

"It will--"

"Elizabeth?? Elizabeth!" Jack shouted, running into the café dramatically. "ELIZABETH!" She turned around to see him there, looking all around for her.

"Jack!" She choked. "Jack!!"

They ran to each other and hugged tight. She felt her cheek against his chest, feeling his heartbeat.

He really wasn't dead and they were together again.

The End.
