They entered a dark room, with broken pieces all around it.
"I don't like this. I don't like this at all" said Hermione
"Where are we" asked Mary
"A graveyard" suggested Harry
"This is no graveyard" said Roxy "It's a chessboard" said Roxy. They walked out onto the marble board and flames light, illuminating the board and GIANT players.
"There's the door" said Harry
They walked across the board, towards the door. Suddenly, as they reached a line of pawns, the pawns brang up their swords. The five jump and back up.
"Now what do we do" asked Mary
"It's obvious, isn't it" said Roxy
"We've got to play our way across the room" said Ron.
"All right. Harry, you take the Bishop's square" said Ron
"Hermione, you'll be the Queen's side castle, Mary you be that castle" said Roxy
"I'll be the Queen" said Roxy
"As for me, I'll be a knight" said Ron. They all took their places.
"What happens now" asked Hermione
"Well, white moves first, and then..." Ron trailed off
"we play" Roxy finished.
A pawn on the other side moved forward. Ron and Roxy studied the game.
"you don't suppose this is going to be like...real wizard's chess, do you" asked Hermione nervously.
"You there! D-5" said Ron. A black pawn moved forward, diagonal to the white pawn. The white pawn raised its sword and smashed the black one. The five jumped.
"Yes, Hermione, I think this is going to be exactly like wizard's chess" said Roxy.
The game continued. Pieces smashed each other.
"Castle to E-4" shouts Ron.
"Pawn to C-3" shouted Roxy.
The Queen turned, and smashed a piece!
The Queen turned again. Both Ron and Roxy studied the game.
"Wait a minute" said Roxy.
"You understand right, Harry. Once I make my move, the Queen will take me...then Roxy will take her..." said Ron
"the king will take me the you and Mary be free to check him" said Roxy.
"No, Ron!, Roxy No" cried Harry and Mary.
"What is it" asked Hermione
"They're going to sacrifice themselves" shouted Mary
"No, you can't! There must be another way" argued Hermione.
"Do you want to stop Snape or not? Harry, Mary, it's you that has to go on. I know it" said Ron
"Not us, not Hermione, you" said Roxy.
The twins nodded.
"Knight...to H-3" shouted Roxy.
Ron's horse moved forward, slid and stopped.
The Queen turned and advanced. Ron breathed faster, clutching the steel reins. The Queen stopped. SMASH! Ron went flying off the horse and landed on the floor, unconscious.
"RON"
Hermione started walking to him. "NO! Don't move! Dont forget, we're still playing" said Roxy. Hermione moved back.
"Queen to H-3" said Roxy. Roxy took out the white Queen, then held her breath.
The white king moved one place forward, and took out Roxy.
Roxy lied unconscious, next to Ron.
"Roxy" whispered Mary.
Harry walked the diagonal in front of the King.
"Check" said Harry. The king moved across one space.
"Checkmate" said Mary, walking infront of him.
The Kings sword fell onto the ground victory. Harry, Mary and Hermione ran to Ron and Roxy. They bend beside them.
"Take care of them" said Mary
"Then, go to the owlery. Send a message to Dumbledore. They're right..." Harry trailed off in fright.
"We have to go on" finished Mary determinedly.
"You'll be okay, Harry. You're a great wizard, you really are" said Hermione.
"Not as good as you two" said Harry, looking between Hermione and his sister.
"Us" asked both girls.
"Books and cleverness" asked Hermione
"Weirdness" asked Mary
"There are more important things. Friendship, and bravery" said Hermione.
"
But I'm not brave, I'm scared" said Harry.
"Harry, being brave isn't not being scared, it's being scared but doing the right thing anyway" said Mary, hugging her twin.
Harry nodded and they started walking away.
"Good luck" whispered Hermione.
