Jen's P.O.V.
"Hello?" I say into the phone.
"Hi, Jen. It's Connor again. Do you think you could get to the hospital soon?"
"Uh, yeah, sure. Why?" I start to grow worried.
"Well, it's Josh. He got into a serious car accident not too long ago. Just come to the hospital and I'll meet you in the lobby." And with that, Connor hangs up. I change out of my pajamas into jeans and a sweatshirt and head downstairs. After telling my parents and brothers what happened, Blaine offers to drive me to the hospital. Since I'm so scared and don't feel I could handle driving, I take him up on his offer. We hurry into his car and drive to the hospital. When we arrive, he lets me out of the car.
"I've got work to do at home, but call me when you need to be picked up." He says.
"Okay. Thanks, Blaine." I reply. I guess he drove away after that, but I really don't know since I was a little preoccupied with thoughts of Josh. I rushed through the front doors of the hospital and found Connor in the lobby.
"Hey, Jen. Come with me." Connor says as soon as he sees me. After a short elevator ride, we arrive on Josh's floor. I follow Connor down the hallway and into a room marked with a number 4. Inside, both of his parents were crying.
"Is he-" I begin.
"No, he's in a coma. But the doctors figure he'll wake up soon." Connor informs me.
"Oh, thank God." I say, taking a seat in one of the chairs. I notice how peaceful Josh looks when asleep. Well, he's not asleep, but I force myself to think that way. To think that in a few minutes he'll be awake and his usual self. He'll laugh and tell me a funny story. He'll talk about the fun things we used to do together. Josh will be fine. Right.
A little while later, Connor suggests that his parents go home and rest. He offers to stay and watch over Josh through the night. At first, they look unsure, but I guess they must be pretty tired because they eventually oblige. Connor tells me to go home, but I refuse.
"No, Connor. I'm fine, really. I'll just let my parents know. I really want to be here when Josh wakes up."
Realizing any attempt to make me leave is futile, Connor takes a seat in the chair next to me. Neither of us say anything. There's nothing to say.
After a while, I find myself thinking about Josh and Nick. What else? But this time, I realize that I don't like Nick the way I like Josh. What I need isn't Nick's pushover attitude, but Josh's sensibility. His calm, but sure love. I can't believe that it took me until Josh was on his death bed to realize this. I begin to think about how Josh and I would look as a couple, before the tendrils of sleep pull me into oblivion.
