Chapter 23: Once more

Mizuki POV

"Do you think she'll wake up soon?"

"I don't know....She was seriously injured. But how did she get these injuries?"

"We don't know. We just woke up and went to get water, then found her there at the river."

"I see. Well I'm sure she will appreciate your kindness. She will be fine from here on."

'Voices. I hear unfamiliar voices...from where? What happened?' I thought to myself as I couldn't quite feel my body but I could faintly hear the conversation that was going on.

But those voices were being drowned out by my own thoughts.

'Hoshino...That's right, the demon that I fought and I ended up falling unconscious by the river.... But there is still a demon out there.' I thought

But even with my rapid thoughts and worries, I soon fell into the darkness.

"You're up! How are you feeling?" An older woman spoke as she looked worriedly at me.

I gave the woman a thankful smile. "A little sore but thank you. Are you the one who found me?" I asked politely as I shifted around.

"My husband found you when he went to get water from the river. He almost thought you were dead with the amount of blood you lost."

"Ah. I'm really grateful for what you and your husband have done for me. Let me repay you for the treatment."

"No it's quite alright!! But- would you mind telling me how you got so hurt?"

Sweat dropping, I awkwardly laugh and scratch the side if my face. "U-uh I think I was attacked by a bear or some other creature. I just know that I was walking back towards an inn after arriving at this town...And suddenly I found myself being attacked." I lied while holding my wounds.

"Ah! I see, it really is a dangerous world out there isnt it! I should probably warn my husband the next time he heads towards the river wara incase it comes back..." the woman mumbles off as I sigh in relief that she believed me.

'But in any case, I should head back out to meet with Takeya....Hoshino  warned me about the other demon and more people are going missing or found dead.' I think to myself as the woman goes to fetch a tray of food and my belongings.

"Here miss, eat this to replenish your strength and these are your belongings. It's interesting to see a woman carry a sword. Is it your husband's??" She questioned while placing the items down. I blinked a couple times and awkwardly laughed. 

"Thank you for the food." I said as I dismissed her question

"Thank you for your hospitality." I thanked the couple as I was now dressed in a new attire, a loose purple kimono with lilies covering the bottom. 

The couple smiled worriedly as they looked at me and wished me luck on my journey. Bowing at the couple, I handed them an perfume bag filled with wisteria and some money to pay for my treatment and clothes. As they tried to deny the items, I smiled and bid them goodbye. 

Turning away, my face became stiff as I walked with my sword hanging on the side of my waist. 'Let's find clues on the next demon and find Takeya...' I think to myself as I pass the town folks. 

"Did you hear that women are disappearing? Not too long ago the missing women were found, well their corpses!"  an older woman gossiped while her friends looked at her in shock. 

"Really?!" 

"I heard about that too! Limbs, bloodied houses, destroyed areas...How scary! Recently I heard a young man who went to work and when he returned...his pregnant wife was found dead!"
