I was deemed useless today during office hours. I tried to get at least some work done but my mind kept wandering back to the events the night before. When I woke up at the break of dawn, I was in a strange bed with a stranger. I suddenly felt ashamed knowing I gave my virginity in a drunken state.
Without looking at the man sleeping soundly beside me, I covered my nakedness, gathered my belongings and ran. Now, I'm regretting the fact that I didn't bother knowing who the man was and the thing is that he lives one floor below.
"It's not like I won't ever find out who he is. I know where he lives," I said loudly, convincing myself that it was for the best for me to get the hell out of there before he could even find out who I am. "But what if he knows? This is so embarrassing."
"What is?" I heard a deep voice coming from the doorway. I quickly snapped my head towards the door to find my cousin standing there. I studied his feature with new found interest and then it hit me.
"Harvey, did you get a scratch on your car yesterday?" I asked hastily. "Well, did you?" I pried when he closed the door behind him and sat on a chair without answering my question. He stared at me for sometime as if waiting for something.
"Okay, welcome back. How was your trip to New York? I'm glad everything is under control. I heard you closed the deal. Congratulations, I knew you had it in you. So, did you?" Harvey let out a laugh much to my irritation. Seriously, how hard is it to answer the damn thing.
"Yeah, Bert didn't even recognized me. Which brings me to the reason why I'm here, no need to pay for it, I'll get grandpa to fix it." He finally replied but didn't make any distinction that he's going to leave.
"Okay, I know it's disheartening that Bert did not recognize you but to his defence he panicked. His family is going through a lot plus he's getting old and I bet he didn't even glance at your face, I didn't either. I just thought you looked a hell lot like someone but my mind was somewhere else." To his credit, Harvey does look different. He got rid of those thick framed glasses he wears because of his poor sight and he got a hair cut so his bangs aren't covering his eyes. In short, he looks better.
"Well I wasn't around for a long time like what, two months? I bet if Bert sees me now he'll remember yesterday's accident. But I heard you're getting married to Cole Noir." Harvey quickly changed the subject. Ah, so that's why he's here.
"Where did you hear that from? Whatever, why am I even talking to you? I'm still ignoring you so get out of my office." I busied myself, arranging the files that I'm supposed to go over if I wasn't so distracted.
Harvey Jones is the son of my aunt from my father's side. His grandmother was my grandfather's sister and since Aunt Mary was an only child, when she died when Harvey was ten, we were Harvey's only relatives. We took him in and instantly we developed a deep bond mainly because we know what it feels like to lose our loved ones at a very young age.
I thought he had no idea who his father is but he knew for a very long time and they secretly meet up away from the eyes of the public. To think that Harvey would keep a secret from grandpa and I.
Before he left for New York, i heard him talking to grandpa about his dad but I didn't quite catch his name. Of course being me, I barged in and demanded answers but he said once he comes back he'll tell me. And once again, me being me I told him if he doesn't tell me before he leaves he can just go to hell and forget we're related. He called me immature and left laughing.
"Marge, c'mon I know you love me and you sort of felt betrayed when you found out I'm keeping my father's identity a secret but what am I supposed to do when he told me to keep our relationship a secret from anyone. He is a powerful man and he can't just announce to everyone his bastard son."
