It hit me like a tsunami. The cold. The pain. It felt like I was being burned alive.
I thrashed against, trying to escape, but I had no idea which way was up. I didn't know which way to swim.
Opening my eyes I tried to see where I was in the water. But I could barely make out a metre in front of me. Letting go some of my precious breath I watched which way it went. So I could follow it to safety, so I could get myself, and Annie out.
Trying to see as much as I could, I saw that the bubbles floated straight up above me.
Holding Annie tightly in my arms, I start kicking furiously, trying to see the sky again.
Bursting through the icy water, I no longer saw only dark. Blue and red flashing lights came into my vision, along with many spot lights shining down at us.
Almost instantly I was showered with questions aimed towards me.
"what's your name?"
"do you know what has happened?"
"is this your daughter? Can you let go of her sir?"
I closed my eyes and I clutched Annie tighter to my body. They can't take her from me. Not now. But before I could say any answers to these strangers questions, I was being lifted from the lake and onto the cold stable ice next to us.
By the next thing I knew the strangers were on me again. Asking questions, forcing my eyes open and shining bright lights towards them, someone's icy fingers searched for a pulse below my jaw, others sighed in relief as they said I was alive. I wanted to talk, and say that there is no need for this, I am alive, there's no point in fussing over me, but I couldn't talk, I couldn't move, I was to exhausted. But I could still hold on to my daughter. That was a bonus. So I stopped trying to help, and just sat, and listened to the unfamiliar voices.
"is she alive?"
"yes, but barely. And I can't seem to get him to let her go."
"they seem to have been out here for a while, we need to get them out of here now!"
With that, Annie was lifted out of my arms. My eyes were wide open and searching for her instantly. She was being wielded away on a white bed towards to the flashing lights. With all my strength I yelled out her named and tried desperately to get up and go after her. But I only managed to get to my knees before an army of hands pushed and restrained me onto a white bed of my own. They kept repeating for me to calm down, but I only got more frustrated for all I could do was watch as my little girl got further and further away from me, and was eventually out of my sight completely.
It didn't take to long, before sleep took over.
