"We should've thought this through..."
"I guess not many people want to come to the park when it's freezing cold out," Kai chuckled, rubbing his hands together to try to retain some warmth.
It had been at least 4 weeks since we decided that we would play every Saturday and at first it seemed like a good idea, but now that winter was here, we were miserable. Our fingers were frozen, our skin turning red as the cold nipped at our fingers.
"We don't need a big crowd to play," I told him. "We just need a keyboard and each other."
I removed my hands from my pockets, immediately regretting it after what heat I had managed to accumulate over the past several minutes immediately disappeared. I rubbed my hands together before playing a simple scale to 'Warm up'. Kai took the time that I 'warmed up' to warm his frozen fingers. When they felt warm enough, he started with his insane amounts of scales. When he finished, we both took some time to warm our hands and in that time, we gathered a small crowd of the few people who actually walked in the park. It consisted of an older couple, a mother and her child, an older woman walking her dog, and a middle aged man who was on his phone.
When our fingers felt warm enough, we played. The same song as always. We had gotten so much better at it. If you just listened to us play, you wouldn't be able to tell that it was two people instead of one. We sat close together, our shoulders almost touching. It was nice because I could feel the warmth radiating off of him. It made me feel warmer in this freezing cold weather. After we finished playing the one song, I sat on my hands to warm them and Kai continued to play, his freezing fingers not slowing him down one bit.
After a few short songs, he stopped to rub his hands together. I removed my hands from the warmth and moved them to his, grabbing his hands and giving him all the warmth I had been building up, rubbing his hands slightly to get them even warmer. He nodded as a subtle thank you gesture and continued to play as I once again, sat on my hands. Eventually, the crowd disbursed and we decided to leave too. We began to pack up his keyboard, which was also freezing, but we were interrupted by a seemingly well kempt man. He was clean cut and wore a long coat over what seemed to be a suit. His face was flushed and he was panting, but not too heavily. He'd probably jogged his way here.
"Ah! I'm so glad I caught you!" He cried in joy, rubbing his cold hands together.
"Can we help you?" I asked, standing up from where I had been squatting, helping Kai put things in the bag.
"You can't," he said bluntly whilst pointing at me. "He, on the other hand, can."
Kai looked surprised to see the man pointing at him. He immediately stood up and tried to look as professional and kind as possible in his big puffy jacket.
"Uh... how can I help you sir?" He asked, placing his hands in front of him.
"Come over here with me," the man gestured. It seemed he didn't want me hearing what he was going to tell/ask Kai.
Kai immediately made eye contact with me, as if to ask both if it was okay and if it was safe. I gave him a small nod. I, of course, would keep a close eye on him to make sure nothing happened.
He walked a small distance away, just far enough so I couldn't hear what they were saying. I continued to put Kai's keyboard and equipment away, often glancing at the two. I never saw much, but before Kai came back I did manage to catch the man handing him a card before walking away. Kai was stunned as he made his way back over to me. He looked as if he didn't believe what had just happened.
I picked up the back as best I could with my frozen hands, and walked swiftly towards Kai, more curious than ever about what had happened.
"What happened?" I asked eagerly.
