I don't think any moment could've been more awkward than that one. The nervousness was starting to get to me. Serving a table with random rich people was way different (and way easier) than serving a table filled with your friends, their parents, and the parents of the guy you had a crush on. I had to clench my teeth to stop them from chattering.
As I grabbed drinks to hand them to his parents, my hands started shaking. I took a deep breath and held it, willing my hands to stop shaking as I placed the drinks in front of them. I didn't drop them, but they were definitely awkwardly placed. As I hurried back to the cart that held the drinks, I looked at the four sitting smugly at the table, trying to hold in their laughter. They better have hoped that I didn't see them at school on Monday.
When I finished handing out drinks my hands were definitely shaking less but I was still just as nervous. Yunseo stood just behind me once again as I pulled out my fancy notepad and pen, ready to write down what everyone wanted. My hands were still incredibly shaky.
"Have you decided what you want do eat, or do you need more time?" I asked, trying desperately to stop my shaky hand.
They all looked at each other, nodding to indicate that they were ready. They all said their orders one by one and I marked them down on my notepad, quickly but shakily. It was legible enough, but just barely. Yunseo saw this and memorized their orders, just in case anything was illegible when the chefs read it. I was grateful for Yunseo. I told them that I would bring their food when it finished and they all went back to their casual conversations. I let out a breath of relief when I got far enough away.
"You really were nervous back there," Yunseo chuckled, leaning on the bar.
"What do you expect? I'm awkward," I stressed.
"I've never seen you that awkward."
"His parents were there! Do you know how nerve wracking it is to meet someone's parents, even when it's planned?" I whisper yelled.
"Must be nerve wracking when it's your crush's parents," he shrugged.
"I'm never telling anyone anything ever again," I sighed heavily, wanting to slam my head down on the bar.
The rest went smoother than I could've hoped for. They barely acknowledged my existence and somehow, that felt better. Of course the occasional comment was thrown at me by the four stooges, but other than that, it went well. That is until they paid the bill and left. Two people remained at the table and the anxiety I felt when I went to clear the table was through the roof. My fears were proven true when they spoke to me.
"So you're the one who Hyuka has been hanging out with?" His mother asked.
I froze for a slight second, hopefully not noticeable, and then recovered, continuing to clear spare cutlery and glasses from the table.
"Yeah," I answered shortly. Her tone was so ambiguous that I couldn't tell if she was happy or not and it was terrifying. Parents in general are terrifying.
"I wanted to thank you," she said. I froze for a longer period of time (definitely noticeable) and took time to process what had just been said. Thank me? For what?
"There's no need to thank me, really. I haven't done anything," I assured her, continued to clear the table.
"For a little while, Hyuka has been coming home just a little happier. And one day a few days ago, he came home after being out with friends and he was glowing. Couldn't get the smile to leave his face even if he wanted to," she chuckled, looking as if she was recalling a fond memory. "I've been told by Hyuka's friends that it must be your doing, and I wanted to thank you for that," she said. His father nodded in agreement.
