"I KNEW KATY was trouble the first day we met in high school."

Shaun was in full storyteller mode.

Mina and Katy sat on either side of him, both looking at him in amusement as he tried to keep the serious, deep voice that he always had when he tried to tell a story.

Across from their side of the table sat Shaun and Katy's high school friend Soo and her husband John. Shaun was telling Mina and John the story of how he had met Katy almost 10 years ago.

The group was seated at a table in the middle of a bar and through the multiple stories Shaun had already told, Mina had to keep exasperatedly shushing him. She found herself often having to bring his arms down so he didn't accidentally hit innocent bystanders when he would throw his arms up unexpectedly, which he kept trying to convince her was a crucial part of his story.

Shaun's arms were draped over the back of his chair but his right hand held Mina's loosely, and every so often, he would softly rub her hand with his thumb. Mina in turn had her head leaned slightly against his arm and despite the strain it put on her neck, she had never felt more comfortable.

"I was getting picked on a lot, for all the reasons we all get picked on a lot." Shaun continued. "Plus, I had just moved to the US, so I was struggling with my English, and I was on my way to lunch one day when this guy who was like twice my size yells at me from down the hall, "What's up, Gangnam Style?" So I yelled back, "I'm not Korean, idiot.""

Katy suddenly leaned forward, balancing her elbows on the bar table excitedly. "And I turn the corner, and I see this guy drop his backpack, he's getting all up in his face..."

She made a concentrated face, scrunching her eyebrows in mock anger and shaking her fist in Shaun's face.

"And right before he was about to throw the first punch, Katy comes out of nowhere, steps right between us and starts screaming the lyrics to Hotel California." Shaun said and Mina leaned back in surprise, raising her eyebrows skeptically.

"What?" Mina asked, laughing. Shaun turned to her with a wide grin, nodding his head ecstatically and Mina giggled, imagining an even tinier, shorter Katy suddenly bursting into song in a hallway.

"It's the art of confusion. Works great on stupid people." Katy stated matter of factly and Mina shook her head, still laughing. She couldn't get the picture of a singing Katy out of her head and while she didn't understand why she found it so hysterical, she tried to calm herself down.

"And that's how we met." Shaun finished.

"Wait, so..." Mina began, leaning forward to grab her glass with her free hand and picking the drink up. "She was trouble because she got you out of trouble?"
