I wake up in my bed. No one is home. There's a note on the kitchen counter. It reads: Camila, We were going to wake you for church, but Sofia said you were feeling sick. Be back in 2 hours. Love, Mom. "Thanks, Sofia" I say to myself. I open one of the drawers. Inside sits a big machete that father uses to cut sugar cane with. I take it in my hand and walk to the bathroom. I look in the mirror and think to myself "Will it hurt to die? How long does it take to bleed to death?" I sit in there contemplating whether to stab myself or not. I stay in there for half an hour. "Camila?" I hear. "Camila where are you? I came home early to check on you!" I stay silent. Tomas comes through the door. He sees me holding the machete in my hand. "Camila? What are you doing?" "I..." "Camila, give that to me now." He grabs for it. I turn and point it to my chest. He grabs it. We wrestle to the floor. "Camila!" "Stop, Tomas! You can't save me." "Yes. I can." I don't know exactly what happened after that. I blacked out. All I know is when I wake up, there is blood every where and I'm laying on the floor. "Tomas?" I sit up. I see my brother with the machete...in his chest. "Tomas! Tomas! No!" I shake him. "Camila?" "Tomas hang on. Okay? Please? Just five more minutes." I run to the phone. "911, what is your emergency?" "Hi. Yes my name is Camila Martinez. I live at 761 Sanania Drive. My brother has been stabbed. Please bring help." "Camila, help is on the way. Keep talking to your brother until they get there." "Yes, ma'am." I hit end and run back to the bathroom. "Tomas? How you doin'? "I'm just peachy, pretty lady." "Alright just keep talking to me." "Do you remember when we were little and mom took us to the park?" "Yes." "We promised we'd be best friends forever." "I remember that." "Well I made another promise to myself that day." "You did? What was it?" "I promised I'd protect you forever." I tear up a little. "I love you so much, Tomas." "I love you too." I hear sirens. I go open the front door and wave my hands around. The medics come in and take Tomas out on a stretcher. While they do that I call mom on her cell phone and tell her what has happened. I jump in the back of the ambulance with Tomas. We ride to the hospital and the whole way there all I can think about is the stupid sirens that are non-stop playing.
