That Never Happened

Part 5: Family

Carina's POV:

"Maya what's wrong?" I asked concerned.  "My dad is her birth father." Maya said barely getting it out. 

I looked at the birth certificate and it was true Maya's dad was also Hazel's dad.  "Could you give us a little more detail on how Hazel got into the foster care system?" I asked Justin.

"Yeah, her mother gave her up for adoption when she was born and we tried to trace down the father but we couldn't find him anywhere or anything about him and she ended up being placed in the system." 

"Holy shit I have a sister."  Maya said looking down at Hazel. 

"Since you've signed all the papers you can go home now."  Justin said. 

"Okay, Maya are you ready to go home?"  "Yeah I'm ready."  We got in the car and drove home, Hazel was asleep the whole time. 

When we got home Hazel was still asleep so I set her down on the bed in the guest room that was now her room.  I walked into the living room and saw Maya sitting on the couch staring into space. 

"Maya are you okay?"  I asked.  "Huh oh yeah I'm fine."  She said but I knew she wasn't.  "Maya I know you're not okay, talk to me."  I said firmly. 

"I just can't believe that my dad had a child and didn't tell me."  Maya said in disbelief.  "Maybe he didn't know." I said. 

"Yeah, he was still married to my mom 5 years ago so he must have cheated, I have so many questions but I don't want him to know about Hazel." 

"Okay bambina, I think I'm going to go shopping and get her some clothes, toys, bedding, and decorations."  I said. "Okay, I'll make some lunch for us."  Maya said.  "Thank you Bella." 

Maya's POV:
I started making lunch, after a few minutes I heard whimpering coming from the bedroom so I went to check on Hazel.  When I got into the room she was crying and was curled up into a ball. 

"What's wrong Hazel?"  I asked. "I woke up and I alone."  She said still crying.  "Aw it's okay I'm here now."  I say picking her up.  Then we go into the kitchen so that I can finish making lunch. 

"Do you want some juice or milk Hazel?"  "Juice please."  "Okay."  I gave her some juice and half a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.  Then Carina came in carrying a few bags. 

"Wow how much stuff did you get?"  "A lot."  She said. "What is those bags?"  Hazel asked.  "It's stuff for you."  Carina said.  "Stuff for me?"  "Yeah you needed some clothes and I got you some stuff for your room and a few toys.  I'm going to go put these away." 

"Okay, there's a sandwich on the counter for you and I think we'll look at the new toys if she wants to."  Carina ended up getting a doctor kit, a fire truck, a doll, and a few other cars. 

We ended up playing for most of the day.  Then Carina made some dinner.  Hazel got a bath and got to wear a pair of her new pajamas, we both put her to bed. 

"Okay Hazel it's time to go to bed."  I said.  "No I don't want to wake up alone."  Hazel said tears forming in her eyes.  "It's okay I'll stay with you for a little bit."  "No stay with me all night."  She said tears streaming down her face. 

"Okay you can stay in mine and Carina's bed for a few night while you get used to it."  I said wiping her tears.  Then we went into mine and Carina's room, sat on the bed and she crawled on top of me so that her head was laying on my chest facing me. 

I read her a bed time story and by the end of it she was passed out.  A little bit later Carina came into the room. "Is she okay?"  Carina asked. 

"Yeah, earlier when she woke up she was crying because she woke up alone."  "Aw poor bambina."  Carina said.  "Are you okay Maya?"  "Yeah I'm just trying to focus on her and make sure she's comfortable and okay." 

We watched some tv and went to sleep.  When I woke up Hazel was still on me asleep and Carina wasn't in bed.  I knew I couldn't leave Hazel so I just sat there on my phone.  After a few minutes Carina came in with a tray that had french toast and coffee on it. 

"Thank you Carina!"  "Of course bella since you have Hazel on you I assumed you wouldn't want to move and wake her up so I decided to make you guys breakfast in bed."  She said with a big smile.  "You assumed right."  I said reciprocating the smile. 

I slowly sat up so I wouldn't wake Hazel but it was unsuccessful and she started to stir around as soon as I started to sit up.

"Good morning bambina."  Carina said.  "Morning Carina and Maya."  Hazel said sleepily.  "How did you sleep?"  I asked.  "Good."  "That's good, Carina made some french toast do you want some?"  I asked.  "Sure."  She said.

We spent the morning watching cartoons and eating french toast.  It was now the afternoon, "Hey I think I might take Hazel to visit the station just to get out of the house." I said to Carina. "Okay I think I'll stay here and decorate her room."  "Okay sounds good."

"Hazel do you want to go visit the place where I work?"  "Sure."  She said hesitantly.  "Let's get your shoes on and then we can go."  We got into the car and drove the short distance to the station. 

When we got there no one was by the reception so I assumed they were all in the beanery so we went up there.  "Hey Captain back already."  Miller said.  "Not yet, I just wanted to bring Hazel in to show her around."  I said.

"Hi Hazel."  Andy said.  She waved a little while standing behind my legs attempting to hide.  "It's okay Hazel they're all nice, they won't hurt you."  I said and she nodded.

"So Hazel this is the beanery it's where we eat and down stairs is where the fire engines are and it's also where Maya's office is."  Vic said kneeling to the ground to be at the same height as Hazel. 

"Do you want Vic to show you around?"  I asked.  "You come?"  Hazel asked.  "Yeah I'll come."  We showed her around to my office and the fire engines, she loved sitting and pretending to drive the engine. 

Right as we were about to leave the alarm went off and everyone ran out to the engines.  I looked at Hazel and she was covering her eyes and tears had formed in her eyes threatening to spill over. 

"It's okay Hazel."  I comforted her and ran outside to the car.  "Loud."  She said while crying.  "I know it was really loud but now we're okay and can't hear it anymore." 

I drove home and she ended up falling asleep in the car.  So I carefully took her out of her car seat and went into the apartment and set her on her bed, making sure to not make any noise and making sure Carina knows to not make any noise. 

When I got into her room it was all decorated and looked amazing.  I set her on the bed but made sure to stay there since she wasn't ready to sleep alone. 

"This looks amazing baby."  I said to Carina.  "Thank you bambina."  "How was the station?"  "It was good she loved the fire engines."  "That's amazing I'm so glad!"  She said excitedly. 

After an hour Hazel woke up we just cuddled and watched tv the rest of the day until dinner.  We ate dinner and put Hazel to bed in our bed. 

Carina and I ended up cuddling on the couch together just talking a lot of the night until we decided to go to sleep.  We fell asleep with Hazel in the middle of us just our little family.
