A U G U S T

Considering how they took the responsibility of coming to see me in Rhode Island during the course, I was actually surprised by the actual happiness of my parents when I arrived.

They were waiting for me.

"Honey." My father's arm engulfed me in the moment I crossed the front door, before I could even comprehend that they were actually here and not in the office like I'd expected.

Bewildered, my hold on the suitcase loosened and I felt it sliding till it crashed against the marble floor with a clean sound. All I could focus on the way he hugged me tight. Like he missed me. But then, why didn't he come see me at Brown more often?

"Hey, daddy." I hugged him back, still unsure what emotion was more powerful, childish need for their love or the anger of how they could act like I was just a burden.

"Okay, okay." my mother was tugging at my father's shirt and as soon he dropped his arms she grinned and I was hugged by her instead. Wow. "Kim! Welcome home! How have you been? How are the marks? How was the trip here?"

"Chill, Hailey drives like a granny." I patted her back and she held me at arms length, examining me as if drinking from me in that same excitement as dad. "Weren't you at the office?"

"We left early to be here when you arrive."

"Why?"

They exchange a look, talking with their stares and my mother cleared her throat, tucking a strand of that same dark hair I inherit behind her ear. "We wanted to see you, baby. You barely call anymore."

"You barely visit anymore." I shot back, but despites the swirling emotions burning in my chest it came out flat, almost emotionless, and there was a spark of malicious glee when they looked remorseful and hurt by it.

"You know we've been busy, Kimmy." my dad tried int hat soft tone too, straightening his tie and exchanging another look with my mother, as if deciding what strategy shall they use since they both knew they've been avoiding the days they were supposed to come to Providence. "We had this huge case and-"

"Yeah, I know." I cut the excuse, waving and clinging on that easy tone, both protecting my emotions and stirring theirs at once. "I've been busy as well, you know? It's not like I meant not to call, something else just always seems to come out."

"Kimberly." my father sounded more serious now and I looked from my mother's blinking eyes to him as he sighed. "We're sorry, okay? We obviously wanted to see you, but you were finally getting better and after missing out so much the previous years we need to make up."
