The revelation hit my eldest hard; the fear of not reaching his potential and his anger at being overlooked. We did what we could as his parents; we told him he was strong. We praised his compassion; his words were vile, and he hated his "weaknesses". If he was truly strong, then they would have taken him, he said. His new brother would not have been chosen.
His father knew when to step in. A raise of his hand was all it took. Sometimes the hand fell. The days had not been the same since.
I had not noticed it after that, but when I did, it was too late.
His fiery determination, the passion in his tone, the cold that covered our home, the way he clashed with his father. It was his expression when he finally left to lead his own life...to be his own man.
He wanted to be powerful.
I could see it in his eyes.
