Chapter forty-eight

Mabel's POV

Kierstin sits on my left with Louis on her left, and Harry sits on my right with Nolan in his arms.

We talk about random stuff and Laugh when Louis says something about a woman that walked by.

Kierstin coughs next to me and I look at her to see she's staring at the table in front of her.

"You okay?" I ask and she looks up at me.

"Peachy."

Her eyes tell me differently.

"Kierstin can you go to the van and get my phone off the charger?" Ain't Karen asks her and she rises out of her seat but then sits back down.

"Mom i can't breath." Kierstin says suddenly her voice frantic.

Everyone stops talking and looks at Kierstin.

"What do you mean you can't breath?" Aunt Karen asks with amusement in her voice.

"I-i." Kierstins eyes flutter and her body falls backwards.

Kylea screams as Louis catches her and I get up out of my seat.

"Someone call nine one one." Aunt Karen says as she gets up.

Everything seems to go in slow motion. Nolan starts crying, Kylea is crying, and Caleb is holding her hand. Louis looks like he's about to cry and Harry hands me Nolan as he gets up.

The room door opens and we all look up at the doctor.

"I have some good news and some bad news. I'll start with the bad news." he pulls out a X-ray and slides it into the light up board. A pair of lungs appear on the screen and he turns to us. "miss.Kierstin has a spot on both her lungs."

Everyone seems to hold their breath.

"Your daughter has lung cancer also known as bronchogenic carcinomas. But the good news is that she should survive chemo." he tells us and I look at Harry.

He looks back at me and then he wraps his arm around my shoulders and pulls me closer to him.

"When can we see her?" Louis asks.

"Now if you want. The nurses will take you to her room. But I need to talk to her mother for a few moments." He says and we get up.

We all follow the short slow nurse down the hall to the elevator. We get in and she presses the third floor. The ICU.

She leads us to a door with Kierstins name on a dry erase board. She opens the door and we all shuffle in.

Kylea bursts into tears and runs over to her sister. Kierstin hugs her and then looks up at me. Her makeup is smeared and eyes are glassy. She has a breathing tube under her nose.

"I'm okay Kylea." she whispers to her sister.

Kylea nods and sits down on the foot of her bed.

"When can I go home?" Kierstin asks in a slow manner.

"I'll ask the doctor." the nurse says and she walks out.

When she comes back the she Has the doctor and Aunt Karen behind her.

"I'm sorry sweetie but we're taking you over to Children's to get you all set up for chemo." the doctor tells her and Kierstin looks down at her hands.

"How long will that take?" I ask.

"She'll be on chemo for a little bit and then she can go home after a while." The doctor tells us and I look at Kierstin who looks completely shattered.

"You'll be okay." I reassure her.

"When are you leaving? Please stay in Ohio, you can still live with us just please... dont go yet." Kierstins eyes tear up and I nod.

"I'll stay as long as you want." I tell her and she nods. "But I can go move back into my house."

"Thank you." she smiles. "Do you think I can live with you? I mean there's a bunch of room." each word comes out as a huff and The doctor pushes her shoulders back.

"You guys can talk about that later. Kierstin just needs to rest."

We all get up and walk out of the room. Louis is oddly quiet and I turn to him.

"Are you okay?" I whisper to him.

"I'm fine its just... seeing her like that just made me realize something." he stares in front of him.

"And that is?" I shift Nolans carrier to my other hand and Harry takes it.

"That I can't lose her. Mabel I think I love your cousin."
