Pairing: Morgan Reznick/Claire Browne

A/N: I have posted a bigger story (multichapter) called death wish on my page, feel free to check it out!

Summary: Claire questions her gender and Morgan helps her out

-

Morgan looked across the table to see Claire erase something she's written down for what could be the millionth time.

Alex and Shaun had already left because of an emergency with their patient, so it was just her and Claire sitting in silence.

Morgan raised an eyebrow at the sigh that came out of the younger doctor. "What's up?" She dropped her attention from her phone to talk to Claire, she had a feeling this would be long and boring, but, despite her bitchy up-front, she cared too much about the brunette to have it not keep her awake tonight.

Claire looked up, albeit a bit faster than expected. "Pardon?" She blinked. "Are you okay?" She said this time, more sincere than the last (she blamed it on Claire's reaction the first time).

It took Claire a second to process that the blonde was talking to her, even if they were the only two around at the moment.

"I've been better..." She stammered, laughing lightly afterwards to cover up the fact she was hesitant.

Morgan looked closer and noticed that the paper she was getting frustrated with was the re-newed get-to-know-you type paper Dr. Lim made them childishly fill out an hour ago.

Her eyes fixated on the box with the smudged pencil and noticed the faint 'they/them' lingering under the obviously darker 'She/her/hers.

She felt a weight lift off of her shoulders knowing this was something she could help her with.

"I've been there " She smirked, taking a sip of the coffee she desperately needed. "I guess it comes with the job..." She sighed and let out that awkward laugh once again, not catching on to the hint Morgan was trying to give.

"I'm talking about your gender identity." She wasn't afraid out about her being in the trans community,  at least not in front of Claire.

Claire, who was overly excepting for her own good it looked physically painful. (And Claire who already seemed to be part of the trans community herself)

Claire spaced out for a second, probably mentally fighting herself in whatever has been going on in her head for the past minute or so.

"What?" She didn't bother to meet Morgan's eyes. "I'm a trans woman, I've been there," She said softly and reached forwards to hold Claire's hand, which was almost just as soft as her tone.

A faint 'Oh...' came out of the younger doctor's mouth at the realization. "Do you want people to use 'They/Them' pronouns for you?" She gave a little smile and rubbed her thumb on Claire's hands in an attempt to be more comforting.

Claire's face relaxed with her body and she took a deep breath. "Well... I- I would like to use 'They/Them' but I also want people to still use 'She/Her'...?" She formed it as a question, like she was asking Morgan if it was valid or not.

She shrugged that feeling off, still surprised Morgan wasn't cis herself.

"Alright, that's completely okay, no matter what anyone says, Claire. You're you, you always have been, your gender identity won't change that, how you want people to refer to you won't change that, and who accepts it won't change that."

Claire could feel her nose start to tingle at the kind words, the ones she didn't know she wanted but the ones she needed for so long.

'That was it?' She thought.

It felt like a huge weight was lifted off her shoulders. It was that easy...?

Out of everyone, she didn't expect Morgan to be the first to know or the one she felt most comfortable with knowing.

Little did she know how much better it felt when Morgan used 'They/Them' for her.

There was this one time in the middle of an argument with a patient, and Claire could've sworn she'd hit Morgan in the head with said patient's chart. But then Alex walked I'm and asked what they were arguing about and Morgan went "Claire thinks that we should go in through the esophagus, but they're an idiot because that would risk...".

Claire didn't bother listening to the rest, not out of annoyance or the fact that Morgan worded it as if she was too immature to say it to the brunette's face.

But the fact she said 'They're'.

It didn't even matter that she called Claire an idiot! Morgan made her feel safer, and she never wanted that feeling to end.

And who knows... maybe it will turn into something more...?
